Protocol Introduction • Two common procedures/protocols for mutual assistance on the VHF/UHF FM amateur radio frequencies. • Wilderness Protocol • Defines frequencies and times for sending and monitoring emergency & priority communications. • LiTZ (Long Tone Zero) Protocol • Defines method of sending a tone to alert others of emergency or priority traffic. • Send ZERO for at least 3 seconds

Protocol Introduction • Important for all amateur radio operators to be familiar with both protocols in order to summons or provide help to others when needed. • Protocols are more effective when more people use them. • NOT just for hikers, back packers, campers or similar situations. • For ANYONE to use at ANYTIME, that you need assistance!

  4. Monitoring Note: 146.520 is also the 2 Meters National Simplex Calling Frequency 446.000 is the 440 National Simplex Calling Frequency

  5. Monitoring • Monitoring begins every 3 hours • Starting at 0700 and ending at 1000 • Monitor for at least 5 minutes

  7. Recommended Use of Wilderness Protocol • Monitor the primary frequency and/or the secondary frequencies • Monitor every 3 hrs starting at 0700 until 5 minutes after the hour • Fixed or mobile with unlimited power monitor continuously • Use LiTZ with 10 seconds of tone.
