  3. Stamina

  4. Reading stamina is the ability to read for a prolonged period of time.

  5. LeBron James can teach you how to make the perfect shot but if you don’t practice it yourself, his instruction is of no value to you.

  6. Having reading stamina—the ability to read well for prolonged periods of time—is vital in making us proficient readers. Lack of reading stamina is like trying to drive a car without gas. Even a sports car without gas is useless. Reading stamina is the energy needed to fuel reading.

  7. No matter how good you are, practice can make you better.

  8. Stamina can be improved regardless of ability. No matter what your reading ability level, you can improve your reading stamina by reading for longer periods of time.

  9. Like physical training, to build reading stamina you must add a little more work each day.

  11. Start with 5 minutes of sustained reading. Add 1 minute more each day. In less than a month you’ll be reading 30 minutes at a time with no problem.

  12. You’ll be surprised at much you can accomplish. Reading for just 30 minutes a day for pleasure will make a real difference in your ability to concentrate, remember information, and be successful.

  13. If you don’t build your stamina in reading, as in sports, you will be left behind.

  14. Prolonged reading helps you to… • Keep track of the plot across many pages. • See how characters develop and change. • Follow shifts in time in the story. • Recognize patterns and repetition. = greater comprehension

  15. To build stamina, you must practice the activity in which you want to excel for long periods of time.

  16. If you are “ALL IN” you can become a reading machine! But it takes energy to fuel your reading.

  17. Once you build your stamina, you won’t want to stop reading.

  18. You can become a reading superhero!

  19. Reading is a major key to success.

  20. Voluntary reading has many benefits.

  21. It will make you a better thinker.

  22. Recreational reading is what is important to increase stamina…not reading for assignments.

  23. Choosing what captures your imagination—what YOU want to read—is important.

  24. Visualizing while reading helps us to travel anywhere in our imagination.

  25. Reading what interests and excites you gives you a sense of freedom.
