Migrate 3.6 TB raw data from obsolete DLT2000 tapes in Vax native format to IBM 9840 for improved accessibility and preservation. The data, essential for LEP and Falcon projects, must be transferred to modern media in EPIO format to ensure usability post-LEP2 reprocessing. With limited VMS support and uncertain HP future, a strategic transition plan is essential to maintain data integrity for future reference.

Raw data copy • Currently we have • 3.6 TB raw data (1.5 TB LEP1, > 2TB LEP2) • 2 copies, both on DLT2000 • Obsolete tape medium, no long term support, no robotics • Written at Echenevex in Vax native format • Can only be read on VMS • ~Inaccessible after 2001 • Make a copy on modern media, in EPIO format • IBM 9840, robotics, readable on Unix • As accessible as all other Aleph datasets • LEP 1 copy has started on ALWS • 1995 done, 1994 ongoing @25GB/day. Done in ~2 months • LEP 2 copy will be done during reprocessing
HPUX support • No new investment in CERN CSF since 1995 • Has become small fraction of CPU available to Aleph • Recently used only for LEP1 productions • Not used since Easter 2000 • Scheduled for removal end-2002 • IN2P3 Lyon • Future of HP uncertain, no longer cost effective to maintain • Proposal: • No new LEP2 productions on HP • No new versions of Aleph software on HP after 2000
VMS support • VMS is essential for online, Falcon, raw data • Online use finishes this year • Falcon used in 2001 for LEP2 reprocessing • Raw data will be all in EPIO format after LEP2 reprocessing • Drop VMS support for production/analysis end 2001 • VMS needed also for: • ALNEWS • Book-keeping info from online (runlog, logbook, time charts etc.) • Keep minimal system after 2001: • One server machine, a few important disks • Logins tolerated but discouraged (no backup of home directories) • “Beat’s private machine for reading mail”
