Homo habilis, meaning "Handyman," is recognized as the first species to make tools, showcasing a significant leap in cognitive ability compared to Australopithecus. They primarily crafted basic stone tools and were adept at building huts from branches and stones for shelter. Standing around 4.5 feet tall, their physical traits included a more human-like pelvis and a rounded skull with smaller teeth. These adaptations not only allowed for tool making but also provided protection against environmental challenges and predators.

Homo Habilis What are they????
Importance • They made tools!!!! Homo Habilis were the very first to make tools, because they were much smarter than Australopithecus. They mostly made stone tools (basic ones) because they still weren’t as smart. Their name “Homo Habilis,” means Handyman and handyman means a man who makes tools, which is pretty much like a Homo Habilis… • Shelter?! Homo Habilis were smart enough to build shelter. They made huts out of branches from trees and stones. These shelters were strong enough to resist temperature/weather and it could give them protection from animals and winds.
Distinguishing Features • More human-like pelvis • Around 4.5 feet tall • More rounded skull • Smaller, longer and narrower face • Lighter jaw and smaller teeth • More crowded teeth than Australopithecus http://www.ecotao.com/holism/hu_habilis.htm (also includes Homo Erectus!!!)
