  3. Choosing to Be Alcohol Free The facts about alcohol • Alcohol,or more accurately,ethanol- the type of alcohol in alcoholic beverages. • Fermentation is the chemical action of yeast on sugars. • Water flavoring and minerals are mixed with ethanol to make alcohol.

  4. Immediate Effects of Alcohol Consumption. . At first drinking alcohol may provide a kind of energy or called a “rush”. .Depressant- a drug that slows the central nervous system. .Alcohol quickie affects a person’s motor skills by slowing reaction time and impairing vision. .Intoxication- is the state in which the body is poisoned by alcohol or another substance and the person’s physical and mental control is significantly reduced.

  5. What Can Influence Alcohol Use? • Peer pressure teens who choose friends who avoid alcohol use are more like to be alcohol free. • Familymembers can help teens be alcohol free. • Media messageslike TV and radio and in movies make alcohol use appear cool and fun

  6. Alcohol Role in Unsafe Situations Alcohol and the law • If you are under 21,its illegal to buy, posses, or consume alcohol. • Alcohol ,Violence,and Sexual Activity Alcohol Abuse • Alcohol abuse -the excessive use of alcohol-at some time before they reach the age of 18.

  7. BeingAlcoholFree • Maintain a health body • Make responsible decisions • Avoid risky behavior • Avoid illegal activities.

  9. Alcohol and Drug Interactions Metabolism -is the process by which the body breaks down substances. Driving under the influence Blood alcohol concentration(BAC)-is the amount of alcohol in a person’s blood,expressed as a percentage. Binge drinking drinking five or more alcoholic drinks at one sitting.

  10. Alcohol poisoning- is a sever and potentially fatal physical reaction to an alcohol overdose. Lesson 3 • alcohol effects the body. • Alcohol effects pregnancy • Fetal alcohol syndrome(FAS) a group of alcohol-related birth defects that include physical and mental problems.

  11. Alcoholism- a disease in which a person has a physical or psychological dependence on drinks that contain alcohol. • Alcoholic- is an addict who is dependent on alcohol. • Treatment for alcohol abuse. • Recovery • Sobriety- be alcohol free
