Synecdoche vs. Metonymy. Synecdoche- - Figure of speech in which a part of something is used to signify the whole Or whole used to signify the part . EX: A criminal is placed “behind bars ” (prison) Metonymy- Something closely associated with a subject is substituted for it.

EX:A criminal is placed “behind bars” (prison) Metonymy- Something closely associated with a subject is substituted for it. EX: At precisely ten o’clock the paper shufflers stopped for coffee.
