  2. Definition • a figure of speech in which one word is substituted for another with which it is closely associated • Greek: "change of name”

  3. Examples in Literature • "I stopped at a bar and had a couple of double Scotches. They didn't do me any good. All they did was make me think of Silver Wig, and I never saw her again.” • "Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears"

  4. Common Examples • The pen is mightier than the sword. • The suits on Wall Street walked off with most of our savings.

  5. Metonymy & Synecdoche “The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world.” Synecdoche: the hand is a part of and represents the mother Metonymy: the cradle represents child by association * Synecdoche can be regarded as a special case of Metonymy

  6. Identify & Explain • We must wait to hear from the crown until we make any further decisions. • The White House will be announcing the decision around noon today. • She's planning to serve the dish early in the evening. • The cup is quite tasty. • The Pentagon will be revealing the decision later on in the morning. • The restaurant has been acting quite rude lately. • The library has been very helpful to the students this morning. • Can you please give me a hand carrying this box up the stairs? • The United States will be delivering the new product to us very soon. • The Yankees have been throwing the ball really well, and they have been hitting better than they have been in the past few seasons.
