  3. SET-UP FOR MANYATTAS FOR BUSINESS • People • Livestock • Curio yards • Manyattas run elders

  4. BRIEF BACKGROUND • There are 27 villages in total in the 3 main clusters namely; Talek, Oloolaimutia and Sekenani

  5. ACTIVITIES WHEN CLIENT VISITS A MAASAI MANYATTA • Lecture on the masai culture • Traditional songs and dances • Tour of the homestead • Traditional fire making • Buy traditional artifacts • And other activities on request

  6. SOURCE OF MARKETS • Tour companies/ driver guides • Camps and lodges • Self drives

  7. PRICING • Tourist pay $20 each to visit the masaimanyatta • Driver guides take all the money and only give kshs 500/= to the village

  8. STATISTICS DURING HIGH SEASON JUNE - AUGUST • During high season a Masai village gets an evarage10 vehicles every day. • Cultural village share per year> kshs 500 x 10 vehicles x 30 days x 3 months = shs 450 000/= • Amount collected by driver guides> $20 x 5 clients x 10 vehicles x 30 days x 3 months x kshs 80 = kshs7 200 000/= • Amount 7200 000 – 450 000 = 6 750 000/=

  9. MASAI MARA CULTURAL VILLAGES ASSOCIATION • Formed to address the imbalance • Developed a ticketing system • Bring the cultural villages together • Ensure fair distribution of resource • Lobby tour operators and hotels to support local community

  10. ACHIEVEMENTS • Won the support polmans safaris (main) • Other supporters include maraintrepids, origins safaris and rhino safaris • KATO has been supportive

  11. CHALLENGES • Lack of adequate support from tour operators and hotels

  12. DESIRED CONDITION • Tour operators and hotels to adopt socially responsible initiatives that improve livelihoods of local communities. • Tour operators and hotels to support the ticketing system in maasaimara other destinations like samburu, amboseli etc
