  1. Population Growth in the UK. Key Questions: Why do some parts of the UK have a growing population? Should we limit how big towns can grow?

  2. Learning Objectives: • To understand why some places have a growing population and some impacts of population growth. • To know the pull factors that bring people to an area. • To be able to interpret evidence from an OS Map.

  3. STARTER Look at the following set of photographs and list all the PULL factors that would attract someone to live in these places.

  4. Main Task Using your outline of the UK from lesson three label the southeast of England. What is the population density in southeast England?

  5. Main Task The population of the southeast of England is growing because: • It is closer to Europe • It is closer to London Look closely at the map of the southeast to see the areas marked for development. One of the areas is Ashford in Kent.

  6. Ashford in Kent Study the 1:25 000 OS Map of Ashford in Kent. Identify the recent housing developments and the older ones. Using map evidence identify the PULL factors that bring people to Ashford.

  7. Ashford in Kent Using information sheet 10 find out how the area of Ashford has grown in recent years. Compare this with recent population growth and predict how large the area would be by 2021. Complete Activity sheet 4 – where would the new developments be built? What would be the impacts on present land use?

  8. Plenary Summarise the main reasons for the growth of Ashford. What problems might Ashford’s continual growth bring? Compare this with the Hebrides – is it sensible to allow one community to decline and another to become too crowded? What can be done? By whom? The Council? The Government?
