  1. 2013 MVAC Initiatives Welcome to “The Logistics of Supply and Demand for Talent” January 17, 2013
  2. POTENTIAL “TAKE-AWAYS” In "All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten," author Robert Fulghum declared that all of life's important lessons are taught in kindergarten… The Business Places So today, we will learn about the 1strule of kindergarten…… Share everything!! 16th rule of Kindergarten.. “And then remember the Dick-and-Jane books and the first word you learned - the biggest word of all -” Look!! Career Offices 14th rule of Kindergarten : Remember the little seed in the Styrofoam cup: the roots go down and the plant goes up and nobody really knows how or why, but we are all like that. Plant The Seed!! 13th rule of Kindergarten: When you go out in the world Watch out for traffic, hold hands and stick together!!
  3. “To sleep, perchance to dream, Ah, there’s the rub!” Employers busythemselves making marketing efforts Creating Dod grant requests/research projects. Looking for products to excite customers “Blue Sky-ing” Looking for “talent” Career Offices busy themselves helping students create resumes Providing “interviewing seminars” Doing “dress for success” training Developing “on-line” skills Looking for “placement”
  4. “and never the twain shall meet” Employers rarely prioritize the need to invest resource/time in visiting campuses and developing relationships – hence “pipelines” for talent are “clogged” Those that advertise, more than likely spend more $$ for that then they would in college visits Often a victim of “silo” thinking Career offices fight the “upper management” budget constraints, often getting less than 1% of the amounts spent in recruiting and admissions budgets.. While at the same time, institutions “tout” their “after 6 months” employment statistics! Often a victim of “silo” thinking
  5. IT ALL STARTS WITH A PLAN “Mr. President, knock down those walls!” It takes focus and purpose for Businesses and Career Offices to partner effectively. Focus - understanding the positive institutional image an effective Career Office can have on the marketplace, Advancement, and Alumni Relations, and that the role can be enhanced by sharing relationships already developed by Alumni/Advancement and extending it to the business world. Purpose– Creating mutually beneficial settings, sometimes crossing divisional / professional lines, to periodically benefit one, both, or all departments and potential employers
  6. The “Procter & Gamble Strategy” Before – The “Procter Story” Hiring Prerequisites 3.5 GPA Only recruits at 50 campuses, nationally After - The “C’ville Strategy” Alum develops a parent/alum list Development throws a dinner Career Services tells its’ story and enlists “insiders” Career Services then “visits” P&G once a year P&G does informational “pizza parties” during the Career Day once a year We’re now one of 31 recruiting sites nationally, with over 25 alum and parents working at Procter
  7. ALUMS /Businesses - Recruiting Alums/Parents working for (or owning) businesses account for 35% of our Career-Link recruiters/employers Alumni Relations gives each one a gift bag
  8. The “Jeff Brock/Jeff Beste Story” “Leveraging” Often, the Career Office may give Development a “connect” they may not have had Often, the Career Office can assist a business through its “alum” providing a lead on “talent” a business desperately needs “Giving Back” may not always = $$$. Businesses can benefit from “alums” giving them the inside track to human resources. “Serendipitous Moments” Once the “low-hanging fruit” is gone..Then what?? What can be done with the “extra moments?” What can be done to enhance the talent “supply/demand” by maximizing time/travel effectively? “The grass is not, in fact, always greener on the other side of the fence!! No, not at all. Fences have nothing to do with it. The grass is greenest where it is watered. When crossing over fences, carry water with you and tend the grass wherever you may be.” There’s always another tree!!!
  9. Planes, Trains, and Automobiles
  10. Before They Are “Alums” Graduating seniors fill out an on-line data-base, indicating whether they already have a job or have been accepted to grad school. The Career Services is the site for that data entry…
  11. Partnership Defined
  12. Development of Career-Net CareerNet Site
  13. Truth or Lie?? I don't think there is a hidden purpose to the universe that you have to puzzle out.Robert Fulghum People exist betterin community. Businesses exist better in community Job seekers exist better in community We exist worse when we silo our thoughts, actions, and ignore serendipitous moments “Lew” Gibbs
  14. What Is Our Miami Valley “Community ?” ARE YOU A PART??
  15. The “Real” Take-Aways Are you “thinking” Career Services? “Hide-and-seek, grown-up style. Wanting to hide. Needing to be sought. Confused about being found.” Are you “thinking” businesses? Be Intentional Always be “looking” Avoid “silo” thinking Create opportunities for effective resource “sharing” “Hold hands and stick together” Nurture “seed planting” opportunities
  16. Lew’s 17th Rule of Kindergarten Really Fulghum’s 3rd!! Don’t Hit People!!
