  1. Global Trends

  2. Population growth, and the changing demographics of our societies has become a big issue for the globe. Some countries are experiencing over population, and most do not have the financial means to support this population trend. Other countries are experiencing a declining population, and this has created a number of issues as well.

  3. In many less developed nations, large families are common, and this puts a strain on limited resources. There is often not enough land for people to live on, and this forces people to live in marginal or environmentally sensitive areas. We have seen a recent growth in “mega cities” as poor people travel to the cities in search of work to support their families. At times, this type of migration can lead to the exploitation of women and children.

  4. Population growth in areas has increased at rates never before seen in human history! One example is Sao Paulo, Brazil. One of the most populated cities in the world. Millions of people came to the city centre in search of work, with little money, and no place to live. Many individuals have created there homes on the surrounding hillsides. These are known as favelas.

  6. While in the western world, birth rates have declined as many people work full time, and choices are made to have fewer children or none at all. However, even though the industrialized world has a smaller growth rate, they use much more than its share in natural resources. More and more, a development model based on sustainability needs to be considered.

  7. Even in the western world, problems of food production have arisen. People now discuss what can be done to support future generations. Singapore has started to incorporate vertical farming due to their lack of space.

  8. Many people all over the world do not have access to fresh water. In less developed nations, access to safe, clean drinking water is a challenge. Dying from drought or water-borne illnesses is a concern for many.
