  1. Broad Absorption Line quasars Xie fuguo

  2. Observational properties • Theory frames • discussion

  3. I: Basic information • ~10-20% of optical selected and ~20% of radio selected quasars are BAL quasars • Subclass: HiBAL CVI  1549, Si IV  1400, OVI  1034, N V  1240, Ly LoBAL /LiBAL ~10% of BALs Mg II  2800, Si II  1808, Al III  1857 FeLoBAL Fe II (2380,2600,2750), Fe III

  4. Further information • Absorption is very broad: v~2000-50000km/s, and is blue shifted compared to the emission line • The absorption gas outflows, and locates near the core. • At first, only radio quiet BALs are detected;now, also radio loud ones.

  5. Emission line and continuum properties are similar between BALs and non-BALs, Also, the continua of BALs is redder, esp. LiBALs ---due to large dust(?) • Sub-mm Luminosities of BALs are similar to non-BALs ---constrains on the evolution model • BALs are higher polarized in optical and UV than non-BALs

  6. II: Theory Frame 1 • Fig 4,Goodrich &Miller,1995 • The difference between BALs and non-BALs are caused by the observation line of sight

  7. Theory Frame2, Cohen,Tran,et al, 1995

  8. Theory frame 3 • BALs are a stage of QSO evolution sequence. • BALs non-BALs • Support: more LiBALs in infra-red survey.

  9. III: discussion(proposal) • Jiang & Wang, 2003,A&A • Done at 1.6GHz,z~1.5,1mas ~4pc • Further:analysis on 5GHz.

  10. Whether it a evolution stage? • To compare the dust between BALs and non-BALs, through CO line by VLA
