  2. Political Parties Splinter Democrats held their convention in Charleston, South Carolina a few weeks before Lincoln was nominated. They disagreed about their position on slavery The Southerners supported slavery, but the Northerners wanted to support popular sovereignty as a way to decide whether territories would be free or slave states

  3. 1860 Election Candidates Northern Candidates: Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas Southern Candidates: John Breckinridge (KS) and John Bell (TN)

  4. Election of 1860 Two different races: one in the North and one in the South Both Lincoln and Breckinridge had the most extreme views: Lincoln opposed the expansion of slavery in the territories but Breckinridge supported the federal government protecting slavery in the territories. Douglas and Bell were moderates because neither wanted the federal government to pass slavery in the territories

  5. THINK ABOUT IT! Turn to you neighbor and discuss which presidential candidate you would vote for and why. Take about 2 minutes to discuss and be prepared to share your answer with the rest of the class

Outcome of the 1860 Election Lincoln won in the North, and Breckinridge won in the South Because the North had more people than in the South, Lincoln won the election White Southerners did not trust Lincoln although he said he would not abolish slavery As a result, the Southern states seceded from the Union

  9. Union’s Response to Secession UNCONSTITUTIONAL!! President Buchanan argued that secession was unconstitutional because the federal, not state, government was sovereign Southerners believed Northerners used their majority to abolish slavery, but Northerners claimed Southerners refused to follow the rules of democracy and refused to live with election results

  10. THINK ABOUT IT! Do you agree with the Union’s opinion of secession as unconstitutional? Why or why not? Take 5 minutes to write a brief response and be ready to share with the class. You do NOT need to turn anything in!

  11. Compromise? Although the states in the lower South were forming a new government in Montgomery, AL, others wanted to compromise Crittenden Plan: A plan proposed by Kentucky Senator John J. Crittenden to allow the division created by the Missouri compromise to extend to the Pacific Ocean. Congress did not approve of the plan when it was presented to them in 1861

  12. THINK ABOUT IT! Why do you think Congress opposed John J. Crittenden’s plan? Take two minutes to discuss with your neighbor and be prepared to share with the class.
