  2. French/Dutch • Why did they settle in the new world? • What were they interested in? • How did they interact with the Native population?

  3. New Netherland • Henry Hudson: English Explorer, 1560-1611) • Sailed for the Dutch: Laid the foundation for Dutch Colonies in North America • (Dutch East India Company)

  4. Hennery Hudson • Search for the Northwest Passage. • Funding from the (Virgiania Company) 1610 • Found straight in North America-believed it was the Northwest Passage • Winter of 1611 arrived in modern day Hudson Bay • Munity- Hudson’s crew abandoned Hudson?

  5. Peter Minuit • Purchased Manhattan Island from Natives for 60 Dutch guilders. (Dutch East India Company) • Named colony New Amsterdam – Trading Post • Encouragement of people from different nationalities and religions to settle and trade in New Amesterdam • Good business sense

  6. Dutch relations with natives • 1624- Directors of Dutch West India company gave direct orders “treat Indians in a friendly manor. • Must be honest, fair minded and trustworthy • Dealings or transactions must satisfy the local Indians.

New France • 1600’s France claimed land in present day Canada and named it New France • Samuel de Champlain founded Port Royal • First permanent settlement for France in North America • Established as a fur trading post • Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet • Led by Indian Guides down the Mississippi • Robert de La Salle completed Journey to Gulf of Mexico.

  8. Economic Interests • Fur was a very important business • Many animals with thick furs living in the Upper North America • Coeur de Bois- French settlers who live and work in the woods. Trade with Native Americans • Depended on Natives for furs.

  9. Native Relations • Did not attempt to conquer the Indians • Depended on Natives for fur trade • Learned skills such as snowshoeing and how to build canoes.

  10. Rivalry over Furs • Dutch and French became rivals in the fur trade. • Both had alliances with Native Americans • French becmae good allies with the Huron's • Dutch became allies with the Iroquois.
