  13. What impact might this have on a student’s life……? Research suggests that 17 missed school daysa year = GCSE grade DROPin achievement. (DCSF) The greater the attendance the greater the achievement.

  18. Engage Enable Empower Thornleigh Salesian College - A Sports College OCR Unit R392: Entry Level Certificate in English The Entry Level Certificate in English comprises one Internal Assessment Unit available in June 2011 only and divided into three components.

Engage Enable Empower Thornleigh Salesian College - A Sports College Component 1: Speaking and Listening40% of the total marks 40 marks There are two tasks which will be set by teachers: Discussion Role Play Tasks will be practical scenarios such as developing an appropriate telephone manner and contributing to group discussions.

Engage Enable Empower Thornleigh Salesian College - A Sports College Component 2: Reading20% of the total marks 20 marks There is one task from a bank of tasks set by OCR: Understanding There will be one passage, approximately 250 words in length, followed by a number of short answer questions. Candidates will read the passage and write their answers on the Question Paper. (35 mins)

Engage Enable Empower Thornleigh Salesian College - A Sports College COURSEWORK DEADLINES Any outstanding work from Year 9 must be handed in within the next few days as the department will be preparing the students in this first half term for a piece of coursework based on ‘Poems from Other Cultures’*. 2 drafts of this need to be completed by Friday, 5th November.

  27. Engage Enable Empower Thornleigh Salesian College - A Sports College The countdown then begins… Pupils will then concentrate on the skills they will require for the two exam papers. They will be given a mock exam as well as classroom exam practice.

Of our present Year 11 who took the exam in June 2010, 59% of the pupils gained grades A*-C!! These pupils are now able to concentrate on their GCSE Literature as well as their other exams. It provides another opportunity to sit the language exam in year 11 RESULT!!!

  33. Engage Enable Empower Why this format? Thornleigh Salesian College - A Sports College Attaining a GCSE in Maths is essential for Level 3 study and most jobs. The competition for all post 16 options is fierce and we need to equip our students adequately. This system means that we are not waiting until the end of Year 11 to find out results. Students will know where they are up to and what they need to focus on.

Engage Enable Empower Thornleigh Salesian College - A Sports College Qualifications for the future As the culmination of five years of secondary school, GCSE (or equivalent) study is crucially importance in laying solid foundations for a bright future. GCSEs lay the essential groundwork for A-level and university courses. Achieving the highest possible grades will boost a student’s chances of being accepted onto the university course of their choice. In addition, employers look to GCSEs as a key measure of a candidate’s capability.

Engage Enable Empower Thornleigh Salesian College - A Sports College Qualifications for the future Research by The Daily Telegraph found that Imperial College London’s faculty of medicine said applicants needed three As and two Bs in GCSE biology, chemistry, English language, mathematics and physics. Sheffield University’s medical school said students needed six As in GCSEs, while Kent said students needed five passes at C or above, including English, for all its courses. The science facility at St Andrews said students needed the equivalent of B grades in English and maths. Warwick said all applicants needed a C or above in GCSE English language, as well as maths or a science subject, although many courses demanded grades “above this university minimum”. Leeds said students applying for dentistry needed six GCSEs, including Cs in English, maths, chemistry and biology.
