  2. Mobile devices that have the ability to access the internet have all but closed the “digital divide”. 87% of African American and English-speaking Hispanics own cell phones, compared to 80% of non-Hispanic whites. African Americans and Hispanics use their mobile devices for numerous non-voice activities such as texting, posting pictures, listening to music, surfing the internet and accessing social networks. Minorities, specifically Blacks and Hispanics are the most active users of mobile devices to access the Internet and are heavy users of other mobile data and communication techniques afforded by mobile devices. This makes targeting this group a viable way for telecommunication - wireless - companies to increase bottom line profits. Source: Horrigan, John - Wireless Internet Usage.
