  1. Health & Computer Games Benefits and Negative Impact

  2. Health & Computer Games • How computer games can benefit • Negative impact on health • Psychological Impact

  3. How Video Games benefit Health • Video game playing helped reduce nausea amongst cancer patients • video games are effective in mitigating chemotherapy in children and adolescents • A hand-held video game was successfully used as treatment of a compulsive, self-destructive behavior (lip picking) in an eight-year old boy

  4. How Video Games benefit Health • Video games have been used as tools in cognitive therapy, and a small amount of experimental methodology has used games - not as the subject of the experiment, but as a method of obtaining results. "Playing video games requires concentration, memory, co-ordination and quick reactions" (Goldstein et al, 1997).

  5. Negative Impact on Health • Children in the United States are fatter, slower and weaker. • video games played under three increasing levels of stress elicited progressively higher values of blood pressure and heart rate. • Incorrect spinal development in adolescents • Epileptic sufferers susceptible to attacks when playing video games (TV only) • Increase in incidents of RSI among children

  6. Negative Impact on Health • Some researchers believe that excessive use of these games can cause, mainly upon children, a number of physical and psychological problems which may include the following:

  7. Negative Impact on Health • Obsessive, addictive behaviour • Personality changes • Hyperactivity • Learning disorders • Premature maturing of children • Psychomotor disorders

  8. Psychological Research • The use of computer games in education is a common topic of research. Researching the development of children’s memory skills is popular throughout psychology, and studies have been carried out investigating the potential of computer games in aiding children’s learning.

  9. Psychological Research • There is also inconclusive evidence which links the actions of the student in the prayer room killings with excessive compulsive playing of extremely violent video games. • A police Captain is quoted as saying “The boy only need eight shots from a pistol to kill eight people. Five shots were to the head, and three to the chest. You only normally get that kind of accuracy and kill rate in computer games. Even trained officers aren’t normally that deadly.”
