  1. BE-ABP-Group Meeting Main goals for this meeting: Excuse for getting together in mid-term + LHC and project update + administrative news Operation Progress Administrative news ABP group structure European Strategy Update HL-LHC Project Information BBQ and drinks Overview of activities from the section leaders BE-ABP group meeting; 19.6.2013 ABP Group 1

  2. Chamonix 2012: main goals for the year • Increase beam energy to 4 TeV • Reduce b* to 0.6m (tighter collimator settings) • Stay at 50ns bunch spacing (no e-cloud and high brightness beams) • Maximum luminosity : from 6 1033 to 7 1033 cm-2 s-1 • Deliver 5 fb-1 by June in time for ICHEP • Confirmation of Higgs indication of 2011 run • Deliver 15 fb-1 by end of 2012 to IP1and IP5 at 4 TeV • 5 s discovery of Higgs if it is there • Ion Experiments (ALICE & others…) • p-Pb run in 2013 (✔ 2012 BBQ) (✔ 2012 BBQ) ✔ (deliverd 23fb-1) ✔ BE-ABP group meeting; 19.6.2013 ABP Group 2

  3. Integrated luminosity 2010-2012 • 2010: 0.04 fb-1 • 7 TeVCoM • Commissioning • 2011: 6.1 fb-1 • 7 TeVCoM • … exploring the limits • 2012: 23.3 fb-1 • 8 TeV CoM • … production BE-ABP group meeting; 19.6.2013 ABP Group 3

  4. Peak performance – the numbers BE-ABP group meeting; 19.6.2013 ABP Group 4

  5. Performance: 77% of design luminosity: - 4/7 design energy - nominal bunch intensity++- ~70% nominal emittance- b* = 0.6 m (design 0.55 m) - half nominal number of bunches Impressive performance after only 3 years of operation! BE-ABP group meeting; 19.6.2013 ABP Group 5

  6. Performance from the Injectors in 2012: N.B. the importance of 50 ns in the performance so far. This at the expense of high pile-up. (And they are in the process of re-inventing themselves again) BE-ABP group meeting; 19.6.2013 ABP Group 6

  7. Proton-Pb run in 2013 2012 BIG CONGRATUJLATION TO EVERYBODY !!!(LHC AND INJECTOR COMPLEX) 2013

  8. BE-ABP group meeting; 19.6.2013

  9. WP2 Coordination:  StephaneFartoukh stepped down as WP2 coordinator in 2013  GianluigiArduini accepted to take on this role  Optics well advanced  decision to merge Task 2.2 and 2.3 with Massimo as TL  Bernhard Holzer stops as WP2 Task leader and takes on new responsibility as Plasma Network coordinator Review of the LIU and HL-LHC Upgrade Plans:  planned for October 2013 (machine & experiments)  review upgrade plans in view of LHC Run-I experience  timing, length and number of shutdown HL-LHC News: BE-ABP group meeting; 19.6.2013 10

  10. On 30 May, at a special meeting hosted by the European Commission in Brussels, the CERN Council formally adopted the update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics. The LHC including its luminosity upgrade receive highest priority Physics potential of future Linear Colliders is also well recognized in the Strategy statements “Europe needs to be in a position to propose an ambitious post-LHC accelerator project at CERN by the time of the next Strategy update” and “CERN should undertake design studies for accelerator projects in a global context, with emphasis on proton-proton and electron-positron high-energy frontier machines. These design studies should be coupled to a vigorous accelerator R&D programme, including high-field magnets and high-gradient accelerating structures, in collaboration with national institutes, laboratories and universities worldwide.” European Strategy Update: BE-ABP group meeting; 19.6.2013 11

  11. Long list of potential activities for the ABP Group – not complete: • 1.      LHC • 2.      HL-LHC and LIU • 3.      HE-LHC (within existing LHC tunnel) • 4.      LHeC, SAPPHIRE and ERLs • 5.      VHE-LHC (based on a new 80km to 100km tunnel) • 6.      Linear Collider: ILC & CLIC • 8.      TLEP (based on a new 80km to 100km tunnel) • 9.      LEIR Biomedical applications and new ion species (e.g. NA61 etc.) • ELENA, HIE-ISOLDE, TSR@CERN • Plasma acceleration • 12. Neutrino projects • 13. Muon colliders etc ... • Need to find efficient structure for incorporating these proposals • in ABP studies over the next couple of years • until LHC results at 13 TeV CM define more clearly the direction Future Project Studies and R&D Proposals: BE-ABP group meeting; 19.6.2013 12

  12. Departures from the Group:  Mobility: Ralph Assmann left for DESY in July 2012  Stefano Redaelli took over as LHC Collimation Project Leader Edgar Mahner left for FAIR in April 2013 Christophe Podevinwill leave CERN September 2013  Retirements: Jean-Paul Soucherey left CERN in 2011 (SLS retired in Nov. 2012) Jean-Luc Nougaret took early retirement in 2012  Ghislain Roy joined the ABP group in 2013 Bernard Jeanneret: will leave in September 2013 Christine Petit-Jean-Genaz: will leave in December 2013 (already no longer at CERN due to SLS) Stephan Maury: will leave beginning 2014 (SLS -> January 2015)  Christian Carli took over as ELENA Project Leader as of 2013 Group Structure BE-ABP group meeting; 19.6.2013 ABP Group 13

  13. BE Workshop: • Mandates for Section leaders • DH and GL received mandate until end of 2015 (end of DG term) • ABP will introduce with the new structure SL mandates (end 2015) • Fits to expected timeline for updated LHC results and new DG • Sections: • Organization by expertise rather than machines & projects • need to cover many options for future activities • requires structure that allows flexibility and room for new studies • horizon of end 2015 when LHC should provide results from • operation at high energy Group Re-Organization BE-ABP group meeting; 19.6.2013 ABP Group 14
