Computers and Crystals

Computers and Crystals. Brian Nielson. What Kind of Crystals?. Nano sized ferroelectric crystals. Used for things like RAM in computers. Based on orientation, represents zero or one in binary. Unlike regular RAM, won’t be wiped if power supply is cut off.

  1. Computers and Crystals Brian Nielson

  2. What Kind of Crystals? • Nano sized ferroelectric crystals. • Used for things like RAM in computers. • Based on orientation, represents zero or one in binary. • Unlike regular RAM, won’t be wiped if power supply is cut off. • Ferroelectric memory is being used in smart cards today.

  3. The Research • Researchers are trying to discover if nano sized crystals will work better than they do in bulk size. • Research has discovered that the nano sized crystals require less energy and retain any changes. • Physics is used to determine how things act differently on a nano scale.

  4. Future Possibilities • Future plans would be to use crystals to replace RAM. • Extra battery wouldn’t be need for the RAM with crystals, leading to smaller electronics.
