  2. About me • St. John’s University Graduate - BA/MA • Experience teaching ELA, Special Education, Life Skills in Long Island / Queens for 5 years • Second year teaching at Tiegerman Middle School • This year I teach 8th and 9th grade ELA classes

  3. Curriculum 8th grade - • Greek Mythology • Tell-Tale Heart ~ Edgar Allan Poe • The Most Dangerous Game ~ Richard Connell • A Christmas Carol ~ Charles Dickens 9th grade- • Greek Mythology Extended • Regents Review • Abridged versions of Classic lit. including • Moby Dick ~ Herman Melville • Treasure Island ~ Robert Louis Stevenson • The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn ~ Mark Twain

  4. Curriculum cont. NEWSELA • Most days students begin class with a Do Now prompt featuring an essential question to facilitate higher order thinking. This question is usually followed by a video clip or image to engage the students. • Every Friday we read a Current Events Article as a class and have discussion. Students pair with groups and share their findings using a Current Events Worksheet / Graphic Organizer. (Reading Levels can be adjusted)

  5. Grading Policy 8th Grade • Assessments - 60% • Classwork - 15% • Homework - 15% • Class Participation - 15% 9th Grade • Assessments - 70% • Classwork - 10% • Homework - 10% • Classwork - 10%

  6. Assessments • Vocabulary Quizzes • Reading Comprehension Tests on stories read in class • Projects - Examples: Acrostic Poem / Wanted Poster / Movie Analysis

  7. Portfolio’s • HIGHLY IMPORTANT - all students must keep all classwork in their binders and not empty them. I will collect their work at the end of each unit and put it in their portfolios to make copies and file them. Students may also keep their classwork in their mailboxes located in the classroom.
