  2. Causes of the Scientific Revolution • Renaissance inspires new curiosity. • Exploration broadens European horizons. • Scientific discoveries challenge accepted thinking. • Printing press expanding ideas.

  3. What was the scientific revolution? • A new way of thinking about the natural world that was based upon careful observation and a willingness to question accepted beliefs.

  4. The Heliocentric Theory • After studying planetary movements for 25 years, Nicolaus Copernicus concludes that the planets revolve around the sun. • This was in opposition to the traditional thinking that everything revolves around the earth.

  5. Galileo Galilei • Italian scientist • Built his own telescope to study the heavens • Theories include Jupiter’s four moons, the moon being rough and uneven, and support of Copernicus’ heliocentric universe theory

Galileo • Warned in 1616 by the Catholic Church not to defend Copernicus • Pope summons him to Rome to stand trial • Stood before the Church in 1633 and renounced a confession under threat of torture • Was under house arrest for the last 9 years of his life • Catholic Church acknowledged in 1992 that he had been right.

  8. Gravity • Isaac Newton brings together breakthroughs of other scientists • Discovers gravity-the force of attraction between all masses in the universe • Newton believed that God was the creator of the universe who had set the gravity into motion
