Does Design need Mathematics? Human Ingenuity
Shape, change and movement Some striking designs can be thought of as basic geometric shapes, which have been mathematically transformed:
The world of advertising We see strong mathematical connections in corporate logos:
The world of architecture We see strong mathematical connections in architecture:
It’s everywhere! Flags:
It’s everywhere! From Celtic Knots to Islamic Art to Tattoos and Body Art:
The world of art We see strong mathematical connections in art. Here are some works by, or inspired by Escher:
So what’s this unit about? It leans heavily on the language of geometrical transformation We will need to know and be able to use these words and terms (and others like them): REFLECT ROTATE ENLARGE TRANSLATE TESSELLATION STRETCH SHEAR LINE SYMMETRY ROTATIONAL SYMMETRY
… tell me more … We will need to understand the mathematics of geometric transformations – both on shapes and on mathematical functions. To do this we need to be comfortable with coordinate geometry, with algebraic functions and with loci and constructions (don’t worry – we’ll get a chance for quick revision sessions. So …. You’ll be working on graphs, you’ll be using geometrical instruments and you’ll be using technology!
