ALBA MIXTURE APPARATUS: Dispensing balance, Measuring Cylinder, Bottle, Distilled water, Spatula. USE: As laxative / Purgative CONTENTS: Magnesium Sulphate – 1.3gm Magnesium Carbonate – 4.0gm Oil of Piper mint – 2drops Aqua ad – 30ml dr prashant's www.pharmacology4students.com
ALBA MIXTURE PROCEDURE: Take the required amount of light Magnesium Carbonate powder in the mortar. Add 2drops of oil of piper mint and triturate. Then take the required amount of Magnesium Sulphate in a 100ml measuring glass and dissolve in 10ml water. Then add little of Mg Sulphate solution to the mortar and prepare a smooth cream. Then slowly add remainder of the solution. Then add water to make up the 30ml mark. Transfer this mixture to bottle. Fix label and Cork the bottle. dr prashant's www.pharmacology4students.com
ALBA MIXTURE USE OF THE INGREDIENTS: 1.) Magnesium Sulphate – (Epsom salt) an osmotic purgative. Magnesium releases cholecystokinin which increases the purgative action to produce evacuation within 1-3hours. Magnesium salts are contraindicated in renal insufficiency. BISMUTH KAOLIN MIXTURE USE OF INDIVIDUAL INGREDIENTS: 1.) Bismuth carbonate – It is an adsorbent and antacid. It forms a protective layer. This protects toxins in food to come in contact with Mucosa. 2.) Kaolin – It is aluminum in soluble water. It is also adsorbent and has astringent and anti-septic action. 3.) Gum Acacia – Used as a suspending agent. It increases viscosity of the mixture. It is a polysaccharide, forms colloidal solution with water. BISMUTH KAOLIN MIXTURE PROCEDURE: Weigh Bismuth carbonate, Kaolin, Gum Acacia and transfer it to mortar. Then add tincture belladonna. Mix and then add required quantity of water to make it 60ml. ANTI CATARRHAL MIXTURE USE: Catarrh is characterised by inflammation of upper respiratory tract associated with headache, fever, body ache, cough, malaise, etc. Spirit of Ammonium Aromate – It has NH4Cl which acts as an expectorant. CARMINATIVE MIXTURE PROCEDURE: Weigh the required amount of Sodium Bicarbonate and transfer it to mortar along with tincture cardamom compound. Then add spirit of ammonium aromate to above mixture and triturate. Transfer the mix into a measuring balance. Add more water to make the final volume. Transfer the mix to bottle. CARMINATIVE MIXTURE USE OF THE INGREDIENTS: 1.) Sodium Bicarbonate – reacts with gastric HCl and produces CO which distends the stomach, relaxes lower esophageal sphincter and brings about eructation. They are used for flatulent dyspepsia and also used in gripping infant. 2.) Spirit of ammonium aromate – Flavoring agent; contains alcoholic extract of volatile oil. 3.) Cardamom compound tincture – Adjuvant cinnamon caraway, cochineal- animal pigment gives red colour to preparation. SALICYLATE MIXTURE PROCEDURE: Weigh the required amount of Sodium Salicylate and Sodium Bicarbonate and transfer it to mortar. Powder it if necessary. Add 12ml Syrup Orange in the center of the mixture and triturate. Transfer the mixture in a measuring glass. Rinse the mortar with a little portion of remaining water and add the rinsing to the mixture. Adjust the final volume of mixture up to 90ml. And transfer it to the bottle. SALICYLATE MIXTURE USE OF THE INGREDIENTS: 1.) Sodium Salicylate – Main ingredient. It is non-steroidal, non-narcotic, analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory drug. Dose is 0.6 to 2.0gm. Orally daily in divided doses. 2.) Sodium Bicarbonate – Acts as adjuvant and helps in neutralizing the acidity caused by Sodium Salicylate. 3.) CHALK MIXTURE PROCEDURE: Weigh the required quantity of acacia and prepare the required volume of mucilage. Now add the required amount of chalk and triturate and prepare a smooth clean paste. Add more water. Transfer the contents into a 100ml measure glass. Add required amount of tincture catechu. Now add more of water to make up the 60ml. ANTACID USE OF INDIVIDUAL INGREDIENTS: 1.) Sodium Bicarbonate – It is an absorbable systemic antacid. It may cause metabolic acidosis and perforation of peptic ulcer as side effect. 2.) Magnesium Bicarbonate – It is non-absorbable antacid. It can cause hypo phosphatemia and diarrhea as a side effect. 3.) Calcium Carbonate – It is a non-absorbable antacid. ANTACID TREATMENT OF PEPTIC ULCER: Peptic ulcer is an ulcer in either stomach or first part of duodenum. It may cause severe pain in epigastrium and hypo chondrium due to hyperacidity. The treatment should include:- a.) Reduction of gastric HCl secretion – • H2 Blockers – Ranitidine, Famotidine • Proton pump inhibitors – Omeprazole, Lansoprazole • Anti-cholinergic drugs – Pirenzepine, Telezepine b.) HYPERTONIC SALINE SOLUTION CALCULATIONS: Saline is sodium chloride mixed in water. It can be of three types - 1.) Hypotonic – Less than 0.9% 2.) Saline isotonic – With Blood / Plasma. 0.9% weight/volume; normally used as Intravenous fluid for dehydration. 3.) Hypertonic – More than 0.9% It reduces oedema withdraws infection fluid, relieves tonsillitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis symptomatically.
