  1. Andrew has a dresser in his room with 7 drawers. He has 28 shirts. If he puts the same number of shirts in each drawer, how many shirts will he put in each? 28 ÷ 7 = 4

  3. A grocery store sells bananas in bags of 7. There are 45 bananas. How many bananas will not be in a full bag? How many full bags of bananas can be made? How many total bags will be needed for all of the bananas?
  4. 1. QUOTIENT ONLY A family was preparing for a hurricane, and bought 38 batteries for their flashlights. Each of their flashlights use 4 batteries. How many flashlights will they be able to use? 38 ÷ 4 = 9 r 2 It will take 36 batteries to use 9 flashlights, and 40 batteries to use 10 flashlights. The family only has more than enough batteries for 9 flashlights, but not enough for 10. So, they can only use 9 flashlights, and will have 2 batteries left over. Jimmy wanted to buy his friends packs of baseball cards for holiday presents. Each pack costs $3, and he brought $13. How many packs can he buy? 13 ÷ 3 = 4 r 1 It will cost Jimmy $12 to buy four packs of cards, and $15 to buy five packs of cards. He has enough to buy four packs but not five. So he can buy four packs, and will have $1 left over.
  5. 2. QUOTIENT PLUS ONE 25 people are in line to ride the Log Flume at King’s Dominion. Each log can hold 6 people. How many logs will be needed for everyone to ride? 25 ÷ 6 = 4 r 1 Four logs will only be able to take 24 people, with one left over. A fifth log will be needed for the last person. So, a total of five logs will be needed for all 25 people to ride. Ellen is bringing in cupcakes for her entire grade. She needs to bring 50 cupcakes but can only fit 8 cupcakes on one tray. How many trays will she need to carry all of her cupcakes? 50 ÷ 8 = 6 r 2 Six trays will only be able to hold 48 cupcakes, with two left over. A Seventh tray will be needed for the last two cupcakes. So, a total of seven trays will be needed to carry all 50 cupcakes.
  6. 3. REMAINDER ONLY A bag of sugar always weighs 5 pounds. A factory made a batch of sugar weighing 77 pounds. How many pounds of sugar will not be in a bag? 77 ÷ 5 = 15 r 2 The factory can make 15 bags to hold 75 pounds of sugar with two pounds left over. Those two pounds of sugar will not fit into a bag. Frank had $27 he wanted to spend all of his money on candy bars. Each candy bar costs $6. How much money does he have left? 27 ÷ 6 = 4 r 3 Frank can buy six candy bars for $24. He will have $3 left
  7. LET’S SEE HOW GOOD YOU REALLY ARE!!! Rachel is baking a cake. The recipe calls for 14 tablespoons of butter. Giant sells sticks of butter that contain 6 tablespoons of butter each. How many sticks of butter will she need to buy to make her cake? 2. QUOTIENT PLUS ONE!!! 14 ÷ 6 = 2 r 2 Two sticks of butter will only give her 12 tablespoons. She will need to buy THREE sticks to have enough butter.
  8. LET’S SEE HOW GOOD YOU REALLY ARE!!! Caleb has a half hour for recess. He wants to run as many laps around the school as he can. It takes Caleb exactly 7 minutes to run around the school. How many minutes will Caleb have to catch his breath before coming in after recess. 3. REMAINDER ONLY!!! 30 ÷ 7 = 4 r 2 Caleb can run 7 laps around the school in 28 minutes. He has a half hour, or thirty minutes for recess. He will have two more minutes until recess is over.
  9. LET’S SEE HOW GOOD YOU REALLY ARE!!! Mr. Buzzerd is going holiday shopping. He saved $235 for hoilday gifts this year. He wants to spend the same amount of money on his 8 family members. After he is done his shopping, how much money will Mr. Buzzerd have to spend on himself? 3. REMAINDER ONLY!!! 235 ÷ 8 = 29 r 3 Mr. Buzzerd can spend $29 on each family member and spend a total of $232. He will have only $3 left for himself.
  10. LET’S SEE HOW GOOD YOU REALLY ARE!!! Abigail is painting her fingernails for her birthday party. It takes her four minutes to paint each one. She only has 23 minutes until her friends arrive. How many fingers will she have painted by the time they arrive? 1. QUOTIENT ONLY! 23 ÷ 4 = 5 r 3 Abigail can finish five fingers in twenty minutes, but does not have enough time to finish sixth finger. So, she can only paint five fingers.
