The Tower • Construction lasted from 1887-1889. • Entrance arch for the 1889 Exposition Universelle, celebration of the French revolution. • Designed by Gustave Eiffel and Maurice Koechlin. • 984 feet tall with 18,038 pieces. • The Tower has been painted 6 times. • It takes 50 tons of paint to paint the entire structure

  3. Uses of the Tower • AlendreGustave Eiffel conducted many experiments on the tower. Experiments: • Pressure Gage • Instrument for measuring resistance and atmospheric pressure. • Now used as a radio tower and tourist attraction.

  4. Alexandre Gustave Eiffel • Born on December 15, 1832 in Dijon, France. • Went to school at EcoleCentrale des Arts et Manufacturing • Also worked on, Statue of Liberty and Notre Dame Cathederal • Awarded The Legion of Honneur . • Died on December 27, 1923.

  5. Maurice Koechlin • Born on March 8, 1856 in Buhl, Haut Rhin. • Jr. employee of AlexandreGustave Eiffel. • Designed the Eiffel Tower. • Died on January 14, 1946

Construction • Cost around £260,000 to build, which is about $58,000,000. • The 984 foot tall tower is made of 9,441 tons of steel. • There are 18,038 individual pieces of the Tower. • The 4 base legs are 80 meters apart and are 50 meters of the ground. • Completion; March 28,1989. • Only one person died during the construction of the tower.
