Objective 5.01:CLASSIFY the most recognized styles of furniture Housing Decisions page 532 • Divide a piece of paper into four sections. • Label the sections “Queen Ann Style”, “Chippendale Style”, “Breur Style”, and “Frank Lloyd Wright Style”. • Under each heading list specific characteristics that would help identify each style of furniture. • Find a picture of or sketch each of the four different furniture styles and attach to the appropriate column.

  2. Choosing furniture styles is a matter of taste or personal preference...there is no right or wrong furniture.

  3. Studying various styles of furniture can give you an idea of what you like best and will help you use each piece to its best design advantages.

  4. The first documented fine furniture styles were those of the Ancient Egyptians in 3000 B.C.

  5. Many furniture styles used today date back to the traditional designs from the early 1600’s.

Traditional Furniture • Traditional, or period, furniture styles were developed during different periods of history and are still being used today. • Many traditional styles came from France, England, and the United States. • Traditional furniture styles are often named after the rulers of the era or the actual craftsman.

Characteristics of Queen Anne Furniture • Smaller, lighter, and more comfortable than earlier styles • Has a Chinese or Oriental influence • Characterized by: • an emphasis on line and form rather than ornamentation • curving shapes • wing-back chairs • cabriole legs and with a pad foot • vasiform (vase shaped) splats (chair backs) • cushioned seats • carved shells and fans

Characteristics of Chippendale Style • Gothic and Chinese influences are a part of the Chippendale design. • Characteristics of the design are: • Splat-back on chairs • Curved top edges on back of chairs and sofas • S-shaped legs with ball and claw feet • Later with straight legs due to Chinese influence

  23. Two of the most popular 20th century designers are Marcel Breuer (1902-1981) Frank Lloyd Wright (1887-1959)

Characteristics or Marcel Breuer Style • Influenced by the Bauhaus philosophy of “form follows function” (objects should be designed according to the function they have to perform) • He is known for his contemporary design with clean lines • Used tubular steel frames with canvas, cane, wood, or leather seats • Most famous design was the Wassily Chair

  30. Characteristics of Frank Lloyd Wright Style • His style is described as organic • He is known for his Prairie style of architecture that “fit” into the surroundings. • He designed furniture to blend with each of his house designs • Commonly used geometric shapes, flat surfaces, and slats.
