  2. Genetic Disorder • XYY syndrome is an aneuploidy of the • sex chromosomes in which a human • male receives an extra Y chromosome, • giving a total of 47 chromosomes • instead of the usual 46.

  4. Symptoms/Effects • The individuals will usually be very tall and thin, suffer • from severe acne during adolescence, have • behavioral problems, and learning disabilities.

  5. Diagnosis • People who have XYY syndrome can go • through their entire life without being • diagnosed with this condition because • this syndrome is really rare.

  6. Prognosis • Most males who have learning disabilities and/or behavior problems due to XYY syndrome have an excellent prognosis. Learning disabilities are mild and the most affected males learn how to control their impulsiveness and other behavior problems. XYY syndrome does not shorten lifespan.

  7. Treatment • This disorder can not be treated but the • symptoms can be lessened by physical • therapy, occupational therapy, and • supportive home life.

  8. Current Research • Results have been made that a great number of men who are in prison for aggressive and criminal activity have XYY syndrome.

  10. One Great Story… • Edward Friedlander • He is a pathologist who has XYY Syndrome • He has been able to admit the fact that he can be very aggressive and has a bad temper, and he is able to control it.
