Learn where and when you learn best for each kind of learning you have to do. Make the best use of HFCC’s free learning support resources. Learn to identify what you need help with and prepare questions. Learn from others, but do honest work. Think positively and constructively.
Academic Integrity • HFCC considers academic dishonesty to be a serious offense. What is a placement test?Why is this test important? It is important to be placed in the right class. • The best place to be is a class that challenges you but offers you a real chance at success.
COMPASS Test • 3 parts: • Math • Reading • Writing • Time: 30-45 minutes each • Retake or Placement
Calculators!!! • USE THEM!!! Don’t let the “easier” questions hold you back!
Before testing (retesting): PRACTICE! Do you: • Hate math, didn’t do well in Algebra 1, fear fractions and story problems? • PRACTICE: PreAlgebra • Like math, feel confident, did well in Algebra 1 & 2, Geometry, etc.? • PRACTICE: Algebra or Advanced Algebra
What does your English Placement score mean? ENG 079: Basic Reading ENG 081: Developmental College Reading ENG 088: Basic Writing: Sentences to Paragraphs ENG 093: Basic Writing: Paragraphs to Essays ENG 131: Introduction to College Writing ENG 132: College Writing and Research
Two Items to Note • In order to place into ENG 131, you must score an 82 or above on the reading test and/or a 78 or above on the writing test. • 84 is the reading score needed for most health career programs.
Practice Questions If you don’t know what a word means, you can use the words around it to try to figure out the meaning.
Practice Questions A main idea includes all of the supporting ideas in a passage. When asked to pick the “best choice,” sometimes it is easier to figure out which are NOT the best choice, leaving you with the correct answer.
