  1. Good Morning U.S. History!(Can someone in the class read this aloud?) • I have a cold and have unfortunately lost my voice. However, with you help, we can still make this day a success with everyone’s participation! Today we will be examining a famous painting about Manifest Destiny, or the moving of Americans from East to West across the great masses of territory. These people thought it was their right or “destiny” to do this.

  2. "American Progress." (1872). John Gast.("America" with the "Star ofEmpire on her brow wends her way westward bringingcivilization and industry in her train). As you look at this painting, work in groups of 4 on each step (on a blank sheet of paper) and discuss.1.) What are the objects and images that you see? List them.2.) What is the meaning of these images? List them.3.) What is the illustrator’s message? How do you know?

  3. Whole Class Discussion • Identify the images • What is the deeper meaning? • What is the author’s message? Why? • What does this tell us about life during this time for different groups of people?

  4. Writing • Please answer in complete sentences what the message of the painting is, and what evidence leads you to that conclusion. What may this image be foreshadowing about events in the future?
