  1. The Writing Process Take notes for your writing folder

  2. Steps to Writing • Pre-write/thinking stage: (brainstorm, list, discuss, graphic organizer, topic map, timeline) • Draft: get thoughts on paper without concern for grammar, punctuation, etc. Include as much as you can remember; in great detail • Revise: re-read for clarity, add/remove info. to make writing cohesive and organized, have another person review your story to make sure it is easy to follow • Edit: re-read again for corrections in spelling, grammar, punct. Etc. • Publish: Produce a final version for a specific audience

  3. What to Include • Strong introduction “Hook” to grab the reader’s attention • Transition words that move the story through each event smoothly • Choice of words/vocabulary (voice/detail/description) • Good organization (chronological order of events/conflict/resolution) • Tone (specific for type of audience the piece is intended for)

  4. Your Turn • 1) write down two brief experience that you’ve had that you can remember well My example: The time when I was dragged by my big wheel and choked on “o” cookies The time when I was playing with matches and almost set the bathroom walls on fire

  5. Your Turn • 2) put a check mark next to the memory that you can remember the best and can recall a lot of detail. • The time when I was dragged by my big wheel and choked on “o” cookies

  6. Your Turn 3)begin brainstorming a list of details that you can about the experience My example: excitement/thrill/joy/ sheer pain/ agony/ fear/ scarred for life/never forget/ my idiot brothers/ dragged on the concrete street/ flesh torn down to the bone

  7. Organize the Story • Make a story diagram or brainstorm a list of the major events (including the conflict) that are important to telling your story. This will help you when you start writing the draft. My example: I trusted my brothers • Parents were not home • Brothers babysit • They promised me I’d have fun • I was tied to a big wheel off the back of a 10 speed • We went into the street to go faster • I fell off the back and was dragged on the concrete • The cookie we shall not name was involved • Mom & Dad return • Bleeding badly & choking to death • My brothers are punished

  8. Your Turn • Now begin the draft of your story. Write with as much detail, description, fig. lang, emotion, feeling as you can. Make every moment seem like it has just take place and is fresh in your mind. Don’t stop to make corrections today, just write to get as much of the story down as you can.
