  2. Wendi A general who reunited China, declared himself emperor, and founded the Sui dynasty.

  3. Yangdi Son of Wendi who was the last Sui emperor. He rebuilt the Great Wall and had the Grand Canal constructed. Was killed by the army.

  4. Taizong • Most powerful Tang dynasty emperor who restored the civil service system and gave land to the farmers.

  5. Empress Wu Only woman to rule China. She increased the size of government and strenghtened China’s military.

  6. Pi Sheng Chinese printer who invented movable type for printing out of pieces of clay.

  7. Li Bo • One of the most popular poets of the Tang era whose poems centered on nature.

  8. Duo Fu A poor civil servant whose hard life led him to write poetry about social injustice and problems of the poor.

  9. Ghenghis Khan Son of a Mongol chief known for cruelty and the use of terror. His army conquered the largest empire the world has ever known.

  10. Kublai Khan Grandson of Ghenghis Khan who became emperor of the Yuan dynasty. He conquered China and moved the capital to the present site of Beijing. Led China to reach its height of wealth and power.

  11. Zhu Yuanzhang Rebel leader who led the Chinese to drive out the Mongols. He founded the Ming dynasty. Became known as Hong Wu.

  12. Marco Polo European explorer/traveler who became friends with Kublai Khan and wrote a book about his adventures in China when he returned to Europe.

  13. Yong Le Son of Hong Wu who became emperor and built the Forbidden City which became the home of all future Chinese emperors.

  14. Zheng He A Chinese Muslim and court official who led impressive sea voyages to show off Chinese power and explore the world outside of China.
