  3. School Demographics • Total Student Population K-12: 1304 • 1 Elementary School K-5 • 1 Middle/High School 6-12 • Special Education- 28% • Economically Disadvantaged- 62%

  4. Current School Initiatives • Project 720- 1st year of 3 years • Successful Schools Network (Model Schools) • Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM) • Industry Clubs • Classrooms for the Future • Healthy Youth Development • Regional Choice Initiative (RCI)- Dual Enrollment

OUR Career Journey Started Here 1 Year Ago! • 2007 CEW Governor’s Institute • Our Team Consisted of: • Myself, high school counselor, and two members of the social studies department (one being the department chair) • Our Plan was to start with the 2007-2008 School Year with the 8th and 11th grade students. • 8th Grade- Just before they entered high school • 11th Grade- Changed Senior Project to make more career driven When We Got Back, We Hit the Ground Running!

How We Started This Year …. • Targeted grades 8 & 11 • 11th grade • Senior Project Career Oriented • 6 hour Job Shadow • Requirement of THREE Post-Secondary visits • 8th Grade • Variety of career related activities • Online Career Portfolio • Career Exhibition Night • Individualized Career Plan (ICP)

The 8th Grade Career Activities • 16 Career Clusters • Union City Area School District’s 5 Career Pathways(*information within packet) • 16 Career Clusters integrated within the UC Career Pathways (*information within packet) • Online Career Portfolio and explored many careers using Career Cruising(www.careercruising.com)(* information within packet) • Career Interest Surveys • Individual/Group Based Career Activities/Projects • Post-Secondary Options Available

The 8th Grade Career Activities • Integrated 8th Grade Awards Assembly and Career Exhibition Night. • Every 8th grade student created a Career Poster that answered the following three questions: • Who Am I? • Where Am I Going? • How Am I going to Get There? • Individualized Career Plan (ICP)(*information within packet)

What is Career Cruising? • Internet based career exploration and planning tool used to explore career and college options and develop a career plan. • Features of this program include: • Interest and Skills Assessment • Career Profiles • Multimedia Interviews • College and Financial Aid Information • Resume Builder • Electronic Career Portfolio

  12. The 11th Grade Class Career Activities • Senior Project • Added 6 hour Job Shadow Component • Three Post Secondary Visits • 16 Career Clusters • Incorporated Career Cruisingwithin Junior English • Career Interest Surveys

Junior Job Shadow • All students received a Job Shadow Packet • Required 6 hours experience is chosen profession • Two scheduled job shadow days: spring and fall • Received a grant through the School to Work Partnership for transportation • Students are responsible for researching and scheduling the shadow with the assistance from the career counselor • Upon Completion: Meet one week afterwards to debrief • Thank You Letter • Journal Entry • Time Sheet • Interview Typed • Student Survey

Prior to Student Reporting for His/Her Job Shadow Experience • The job shadow mentor is sent the following information: • Thank You Letter from the School (* information within packet) • Student Survey and questions to start building a data base: • future job shadow placements • career fair presenter • classroom speaker • host field study (Internship) • allow student/classroom visits (* information within packet) • Student/Parent Confidentiality Statement • What Is A Job Shadow?Explanation Sheet (*information within packet)

  15. What are Career Pathways? A broad grouping of careers that share similar characteristics and whose employment requirements call for many common interests, strengths and competencies. Five UC Pathways are: Arts & Communication (AC) Business & Information Technology (BIT) Engineering & Industrial Technology (EIT) Science & Health (SH) Human & Civil Services (HCS) Union City 5 Career Pathways…. By the end of a student’s 8th grade year, he/she will select two pathways of interest and create an ICP.

  16. How We Determined Our 5 Career Pathways • Looked at the Top Industries and all of the other industries in Erie County. • The Top Industries are: • Manufacturing • Medical Services • With Insurance, Retail, Hospitality and Tourism on the rise • Contacted our neighboring schools for information

  17. How We Determined Our Pathway Courses • Took our current relevant “elective” courses offered and placed them into one of our five Career Pathways (Course Selection Guide) • Pathway Focus Area(s) are identified for each pathway course • Added RCI (dual enrollment) courses and Erie County Technical School courses to course selection guide

  18. Created Four New Pathway Courses • Four New Courses are: • Forensic Science • Entrepreneurship • Sports Medicine • Veterinary Science • Received a grant from the Regional Career Education Partnership (RCEP) to help fund half of the cost for the curriculum for our new pathway courses

Other Components Added This Year • 9th & 10th Grade- Keys2Work Program(*information within packet) • 9th Grade Career Class • 10th Grade World History Class • 6th, 7th, & 8th Grade- Middle School Planner • 6th Grade Social Studies Class • 7th Grade Geography Class • 8th Grade American History Class

What Is the Keys2Work Program? • Internet based program that concretely shows the students the foundations skills needed for each job. • Some of the Foundation Skills are: • Reading for Information- Aligned to PA Academic Standards for Reading • Applied Mathematics- Aligned to PA Academic Standards for Mathematics • Observation • Teamwork • Writing • Assigned Pre-Test in any of the Foundation Skills to Get a Workkeys Base Score (3-7)

What Is the Keys2Work Program? • Career Skills Component Integrated • Some Career Skills Lessons Include: • Business Etiquette • Communication Skills • Work Habits • Workplace Effectiveness • The Job Search • All Career Skills are Aligned with the PA Academic Standards for Career Education and Work

  22. Future Initiatives in the Works • Senior Internship with Snap-tite • Pro Engineer CADD Program • Articulation agreement with Clarion-Venango to offer college credit towards an Associate's Degree in Applied Science in Industrial Technology at a reduced rate. • Students targeted are students with a GPA of 2.8 and proficient on either the PSSA Reading or Math.

  23. Finally, What It Really Boils Down to.. Timeline 8th Grader Approximately 49 years Working Retire 2061 Age 67 Graduate 2012 Age 18 Born 1993 Living a HAPPY and SUCCESSFUL Life !

Plans for Year 2 • 6th Grade Orientation- roll out presentation • Add career component to our website • Roll out presentation to faculty and staff during first in-service • Departments- Crosswalk/Gap Analysis & CEW Survey (*information within packet) • Continue to implement and find new ways to expose our students to the world of work
