  11. Summary and Implications If our nation is to be transformed for Christ, then we are NOT pushing at a closed door. Further, this is best achieved, not by church leaders but by church members who model Jesus by their lives and actions. We need to be like Christ and not religious or too “churchy”! What is discipleship and why is it important? (2 minutes)

  12. What is ‘Discipleship’? μαθητής is from the Greek word “to learn” A disciple is someone who learns from the ‘Master’. A Christian disciple is someone who is continually learning from Jesus in order to be a better imitator of Christ, or more ‘Christlike’. Discipleship is the next stage after Salvation. Once we are ‘saved’ what do we do next? So Christian Discipleship may simply be defined as “Continually moving on with God” Has the church been too obsessed with salvation? How do we become better disciples? (2 minutes)

  19. Does it matter what we do? • Our good behaviour and hard work doesn’t make God love us any more than He already does – because of His …………….. • Heresy of antinomianism • While there is no condemnation, there may be no commendation • Read 1 Corinthians 3:12-15 • What does this teach us?

What counts with God? • God looks not at outward appearance (1 Samuel 16:7b) • It’s not what, but why • Our motivation is often: • Guilt • Fear • Shame • Pride • God wants us motivated by love and nothing but love (2 Cor 5:14) These are lies of the devil which are designed to destroy your faith. Use the weapon of scripture against them – complete the attached exercise. Because of God’s grace we are free of all of this – free to be true disciples!

Moving forward by Grace • Bondslaves and Masters • Paul describes himself not as a slave but as ‘a slave of Christ’ (Romans 1:1) which brings freedom: • We freely love because He first loved us (1 John 4:19) • We give freely because we have received freely (Matthew 10:8b) • We are freely merciful because he has been freely merciful to us (Luke 6:36) • We forgive freely because we have been freely forgiven (Ephesians 4:32) • So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.

Summary • If we are to grow as disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ (and disciple others) we need to be set free to: • Accept that God loves us as we are and not based on what we do (Parables of lost son and labourers in the vineyard) • Renounce the lies that the devil uses against us that God doesn’t love us unless we ‘strive’ • Respond to God’s love by our love for God and others and not guilt, shame, fear and pride • So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
