  3. LAY READING SERVICE Service of the word This order was originally prepared by the Department of Liturgics and released in 1991 in a booklet by the Board for Congregational Life for use in the Lutheran Church of Australia.

  4. OPENING RESPONSES L: I will sing to the Lord, C: because he has won a glorious victory. L: The Lord is my strong defender; C: he is the one who has saved me. L: His right hand is awesome in power; C: it breaks the enemy in pieces. L: Faithful to his promise, he led the people he had rescued;

  5. OPENING RESPONSES C: by his strength he guided them to his sacred land. L: He brings them in and plants them on his mountain, C: the place that he has chosen for his home, L: the temple that he himself has built. C: The Lord will be king forever and ever. [Exod 15:1,2,6,13,17,18]

  11. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION L: Let us confess our sins in the presence of God and of each other. C: We confess to you, almighty God, before the whole company of heaven, and to each other, that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed by our own fault. »»

  12. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Have mercy on us, for Jesus’ sake, forgive us all our sins, and bring us to eternal life. Amen. L: The almighty and merciful Lord grants us pardon; and forgives us all our sins. C: Amen.

  13. Lord have mercy L: Let us call on the Lord, to whom we belong through our baptism. Lord Jesus Christ, you are the true vine: C: Lord, have mercy. L: You give us growth as branches in you: C: Christ, have mercy. L: You make us produce fruit by remaining in you: C: Lord, have mercy.

  14. APOSTLE’S CREED L: As God’s people through our baptism into Christ, let us confess our faith. C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

  15. APOSTLE’S CREED And in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead.

  16. APOSTLE’S CREED He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God, the Father almighty, from thence he will come to judge the living and the dead.

  17. APOSTLE’S CREED I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic* church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen *or: Christian; ‘catholic’ here means ‘universal’

  18. OLD TESTAMENT CANTICLE Isaiah 12:1–6 L: I will thank you, Lord. C: Although you were angry with me, L: your anger has turned away C: and you have comforted me. L: Surely God is my salvation; C: I will trust him and not be afraid.

  23. PRAYER OF THE DAY L: Let us pray that we are willing servants. C: Jesus, Son of God, we thank you that you suffered so much because of our sins and gave up your life. Make us willing to serve, and strengthen us for suffering, until we live with you forever. For you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

  24. FIRST READING The first reading for the 21st Sunday after Pentecost is written in Chapter 38 of Job beginning at verse one. Job 38:1-7,34-41 CEV The Lord challenges Job

  25. Job 38:1-7,34-41 From out of a storm, the LORD said to Job: 2Why do you talk so much when you know so little? Now get ready to face me! Can you answer the questions I ask? 4How did I lay the foundation for the earth? Were you there? 5Doubtless you know who decided its length and width. 6What supports the foundation? Who placed the cornerstone.

Job 38:1-7,34-41 34Can you order the clouds to send a downpour, or will lightning flash at your command? 36Did you teach birds to know that rain or floods are on their way? 37Can you count the clouds or pour out their water on the dry, lumpy soil? 39When lions are hungry, do you help them hunt? 40Do you send an animal into their den?

  27. Job 38:1-7,34-41 41And when starving young ravens cry out to me for food, do you satisfy their hunger?  This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

  34. Second reading The second reading is written in Chapter 5 of Hebrews beginning at verse 1. Hebrews 5:1-10CEV Jesus our great high priest

  35. Hebrews 5:1-10 Every high priest is appointed to help others by offering gifts and sacrifices to God because of their sins.   2A high priest has weaknesses of his own, and he feels sorry for foolish and sinful people. 3That is why he must offer sacrifices for his own sins and for the sins of others.  

  36. Hebrews 5:1-10 4But no one can have the honour of being a high priest simply by wanting to be one. Only God can choose a priest, and God is the one who chose Aaron. 5That is how it was with Christ. He became a high priest, but not just because he wanted the honour of being one.

  37. Hebrews 5:1-10 It was God who told him, "You are my Son, because today I have become your Father!" 6In another place, God says, "You are a priest forever just like Melchizedek.”

  38. Hebrews 5:1-10 7God had the power to save Jesus from death. And while Jesus was on earth, he begged God with loud crying and tears to save him. He truly worshiped God, and God listened to his prayers. 8Jesus is God's own Son, but still he had to suffer before he could learn what it really means to obey God.

  39. Hebrews 5:1-10 9Suffering made Jesus perfect, and now he can save forever all who obey him. 10This is because God chose him to be a high priest like Melchizedek.  This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God.

  40. GOSPEL M: The Holy Gospel is Written in Chapter 10 of the Gospel according to St Mark beginning at Verse 35. C: Glory to you O Lord. Mark 10:35-45CEV The request of James and John

  41. Mark 10:35-45   35James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to Jesus and asked, "Teacher, will you do us a favour?" 36Jesus asked them what they wanted,   37and they answered, "When you come into your glory, please let one of us sit at your right side and the other at your left.”

  42. Mark 10:35-45   38Jesus told them, "You don't really know what you're asking! Are you able to drink from the cup that I must soon drink from or be baptized as I must be baptized? 39"Yes, we are!" James and John answered.

  43. Mark 10:35-45   Then Jesus replied, "You certainly will drink from the cup from which I must drink. And you will be baptized just as I must!   40But it isn't for me to say who will sit at my right side and at my left. That is for God to decide.”

  44. Mark 10:35-45   41When the ten other disciples heard this, they were angry with James and John.   42But Jesus called the disciples together and said: You know that those foreigners who call themselves kings like to order their people around. And their great leaders have full power over the people they rule.

  45. Mark 10:35-45   43But don't act like them. If you want to be great, you must be the servant of all the others. 44And if you want to be first, you must be everyone's slave. 45The Son of Man did not come to be a slave master, but a slave who will give his life to rescue many people. This is the Gospel of the Lord, C: Praise to you O Christ.
