  2. Welcome to GDG • “Game development makes a great hobby.”-- Ben Sawyer, author of several books on game and game development

  3. Agenda • Introduction to GDG; • Roles in game projects; • New committee announcement; • New members introduction; • Planned activities and training workshops schedule; • New members registration.

  4. History Background • Founded in 2004. • We organised a 24-hour game development competition called CONTRAST in 2006. • GDG received its first commercial client in 2007. A flash game called Rollo was developed within one month. • GDG members went to MIT to develop games in 2007.

  5. In Year 2009 • Stopped organising CONTRAST. After that, CNM Student Society dropped the program in 2010. • Started two new game projects: Project Fruit and Project Snowdrop. • Organised Game Development Competition with Computing Club and CNM Student Society.

  6. This Year! • Received a lot of signups during the Matric Fair 2010! Thanks  • Setup a beautiful new website for GDG • http://nusgdg.org • More activities and training workshops • CONTRAST returns? • You will be the ones who bring GDG to a new future!

Frequently Asked Questions • Can I make games if I have no technical skills (like programming, art, etc.)? • Yes! • We can teach you if you want, through various workshops, and easy-to-learn tools. • There are a variety of important roles in game development which don’t require technical skills (and which have higher demand for good people).

  16. Frequently Asked Questions • Will I be able to make cool games like Final Fantasy, WoW or Left4Dead if I join you? • Probably not. Those games take hundreds of people, several years and/or a few million dollars to make. • GDG makes smaller, casual or indie games in short development periods of < 1 year. • But the skills you learn and portfolio you build may one day get you an interview with companies who make those games.

Roles in Game Development • Producer • Responsible for making suregame gets built / delivered. • Manages team members, schedule, budget, morale. • Public ‘face’ of the team: talks with clients, press, marketing, management. • Non-technical role!   18. Roles in Game Development • Designer • Responsible for turninggame ideas into detailedplans. Focuses on making gameplay fun. • Many different types: Level designers (e.g. maps), User Interface designers (e.g. menus, controls), Systems designers (e.g. combat, character stats), Content designers (e.g. quests, equipment, events), etc. • Takes code, art, audio assets and crafts a fun gameplay experience out of them. Generalist.

  19. Roles in Game Development • Programmer: • Responsible for makingsure game functions asspecified by design. Workswith the code. • Many different specialties – graphics, A.I., game systems & logic, tools-building, etc. • Also integrates other assets into game (art, audio, scripts, etc.) Graphic taken from http://philrandolph.com

Roles in Game Development • Artist: • Creates (or selects) art assets for the game. • Can have various typessuch as concept artist, 2D artist, 3D modeler, rigger, animator, etc. • Proficiency in non-digital art, Photoshop, Illustrator, CorelDraw, Flash, Maya, 3DSMax, or similar programs is helpful.

  21. Roles in Game Development • Audio Engineer: • Responsible forcreating the musicand sound effects for the game. • Usually one person is enough and does everything. Free & useful sound recording programs include Audacity & Anvil Forge.

  22. Roles in Game Development • Quality Assurance (QA) Lead: • Responsible formaking sure gameis delivered with no bugs or problems. • Creates plans for testing the game based on game’s design. Organizes and runs testing sessions with testers. Non-technical role. • Tests gameplay, functionality, “fun factor”, usability, aesthetic appeal, etc.

  24. Workshops What it is all about • 2-day workshop to cover certain aspects of game development. • Hands-on: will design, develop mini-games and draw art during the workshop.

  30. Workshops After that? • We will have weekly mini-workshops / sharing sessions during our weekly meetings. People can take turns to present on various aspects of game development.
