The Riace Warriors • Cast in460-430 BC • Often known as the ‘Riace Bronzes’ • Now in the Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia • Found on a scuba diving holiday expedition off the coast of Riace, hence the name. • Made of Bronze. • 6’8” tall. • 7 against thebes. • Athenian soldiers at Marathon • From Olympia

Notable features Complex hair and beard. • Contrapposto - Weight on the back leg • Muscles are very clear, and not cut in, soft enough to appear realistic. • Turned head adds ‘life’ to the statue, as it is never done before, it also suggests movement. • Held spears and shields, warrior A had a helmet pushed up on his head, so not in combat at the time, and Warrior B wore a wreath, as if he had won some distinction in combat. Raised hips

  4. The face • Bone and glass eyes - painted. • The ears are less stylised and more realistic than Korous models • Silver Teeth • Bronze nipples - Yes. They’re on his face. I swear.

  5. What does Woodford say? • “The bronze is dramatic and striking. From Drab roman copies it would have been hard to imagine the impact of the intense face, inlaid eyes still partly shaded by bronze eyelashes, red lops of copper slightly parted to show silver teeth. The hair is incised with sharp chisel strokes but the full ringlets that escape beneath the head-band and the curls of the beard were actually cast seperately and then attatched to the head.”
