Facts • A large cargo ship can emit pollutants equivalent to that of 12,500 cars • In international waters ship emissions are one of the least regulated parts of our global transportation system • In a study it has been found that cargo ships have produced more than a million tons of pollutants in a year • Cargo ships burn about 380 tons per day • Average ship travels at an average of 14 to 17 knots
Fuel Efficient Alternative • The Nissan car company created a more fuel efficient cargo ship. They created the “City of St. Petersburg” which is a diesel hybrid power train that allows some energy to be recaptured in a bank of nickel-metal-hydride batteries just like those used in its hybrid cars. The ship uses 800 tons less fuel a year and is 50% more aerodynamic than other cargo ships. The ship therefore emits 2500 tons less CO2 annually (Voelcker, John). • Has an average speed of about 17 knots or 20 mph • Has a 24 manned crew http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iF7M9HKfwqM
Emissions-Free Alternative Solar-Powered Cargo Airship • Carries 120,000 pounds • Has speeds of 182 mpg during the day and 165 mpg at night • Has altitude of 30,000 • Costs nearly $5 million
