Supreme Court Ruling on Church of Lukumi Babalu Aye v. Hialeah: Protecting Religious Freedom
In the landmark case Church of Lukumi Babalu Aye v. Hialeah (1993), the Supreme Court unanimously ruled that Hialeah's ordinances prohibiting animal sacrifices violated the First Amendment's Free Exercise Clause. The Court found that the ordinances were neither neutral nor generally applicable, specifically targeting the religious practices of the Santeria faith. The decision reinforced the protection of religious rights against discriminatory laws, emphasizing that governmental interests must be compelling and narrowly tailored to avoid undue burdens on religious conduct.
