  5. The Common Core Shift This is the first year that CMS is using the Common Core State Standards in place of the “NC Standard Course of Study.” . What is the “Common Core?” • Mission Statement (Taken from Common Core website)“The Common Core State Standards provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn, so teachers and parents know what they need to do to help them. The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers.   6. 5th Grade Math • Daily Problem Solving • Investigations • Number Sense/Place Value • Multiplication and Division • Whole Numbers • Fractions/Decimals • Geometry, Measurement, Graphing • Algebra

Math Investigations… • Makes all mathematic topics accessible for all students • Uses concrete mathematical manipulative objects as a natural part of instruction • Treats problem solving as the primary purpose of mathematics • Assigns fewer computational exercises and more problems that require higher-order thinking for all students

  8. Math Investigations…continued • Asks students to justify and explain their thinking • Incorporates group learning experiences into many lessons • Uses different types of formal and informal assessment

  9. 5th Grade ReadingA Balanced Literacy Approach • “Daily 5” • Read-to-Self (focus on building stamina) • Work on Writing (Writing Process, “Being a Writer”) • Word Work (Greek & Latin Roots, Contextual vocabulary, “Nifty, Thrifty, Fifty,” Spelling) • Read With (Partner reading, Guided reading with the teacher) • Listen to Reading (Read-alouds, listening with headsets) • Accelerated Reader (AR) • Imagine It - Less emphasis this year • Novel Studies • Non-Fiction/Informational/Expository text

  10. ThemesWe will incorporate some of the Imagine It thematic units into our Daily 5 framework. These themes will also tie into Studies and Science. Primarily, we will focus on these Imagine It themes: • Unit 1-Heritage • Unit 2-Energy at Work • Unit 3-Making a New Nation • Unit 5-Going West As the year progresses, we will incorporate other thematic units into the Daily 5 framework based on student interests and needs.

  11. Cursive Writing It is the expectation at River Gate that, starting after Winter Break, all 5th grade work will be done in cursive. Toward that end, we will review cursive handwriting. Science Through hands-on exploration and discussion, students will investigate the following topics: • Forces and Motion • Matter: Properties and Change • Energy: Conservation and Transfer • Earth Systems, Structures, and Processes • Structures and Functions of Living Organisms • Ecosystems • Evolution and Genetics Students will attend classes in the science lab each week.

  13. Social Studies Students will learn about key developments in U.S. history and the impact on the land and people of the nation. Key topics include: • History • Geography and Environmental Literacy • Economics and Financial Literacy • Civics and Governance • Culture

  14. Health RHASE (Reproductive Health and Safety Education is a K-12 Health Education Program. The RHASE Program will consist of in class discussions, a video, which will be available by request for you to view prior to the start of RHASE, and a culminating presentation at River Gate. Parent Permission is given by default. If you wish your child not to participate, you will need to sign a form requesting him/her not to be part of the lessons. We will let you know in advance.

  15. Homework • 20-30 min of nightly reading, must be recorded on reading log and signed by a parent nightly. • Language Arts • Word Study – Spelling/Vocabulary • Specific Skills • Math – nightly assignment • Science – small assignment some evenings

  16. Accountability Students will receive a mid-term grading report at the mid-way point of each nine week grading period. Students will receive a report card at the end of the nine week grading period. Students receive weekly reports in their Thursday folders that need to be signed each week.

  17. Accountability…continued In 5th grade, students will take the North Carolina End-of-Grade Tests in the following areas: • Math • Reading • Science

  18. Grading Scale 93-100=A 85-92=B 77-84=C 70-76=D 69 and below=F All grades are available via Parent Assist.

  19. 5th Grade Behavior Plan • Use of Agendas •  = Great Day! Way to go! • 1 = Warning • 2 = Note + Consequence • 3 = Note + double consequence + phone call or email • Severe behavior issues will be handled by administration • Please remember to sign your child’s agenda nightly!

  21. Field Trips • October 1, 2012 – Camp Thunderbird • March 14, 2013 – McGlohon Theater at Spirit Square (“We the People” play) • April ?, 2013– Forces and Motion day at Carowinds • May 29-30, 2013 – Atlanta (overnight, cost will not exceed $200/person)
