  3. Introductory Sentence ORThesis Statement • is a road map for the essay; in other words, it tells the reader what to expect from the rest of the essay. • In an introduction restates the question and gives the reader an idea of what the essay will be about. • Do NOT use “I” in a essay

  4. Weak Thesis Statement: • There were many precedents set by the early governments at Jamestown and Plymouth. This weak thesis restates the question without providing any additional information. You will expand on this new information in the body of the essay, but it is important that the reader know where you are heading. A reader of this weak thesis might think, "What precedents? What about the long-term effects? Ask yourself these same questions and begin to elaborate on the Jamestown and Plymouth governments.

  6. Paragraph #1 • Jamestown, Virginia was colonized in 1607 by an all male group of English settlers in search of gold. As the colony grew the main economy switched to tobacco farming which was very profitable. Soon families began coming over to Jamestown to begin a new life. The increase in population fueled a need for a strong government. In 1619, the Virginia House of Burgess was created to govern the new colony. The Virginia House of Burgess was important because it created the first representative government in the New World. A representative government is when people elect their fellow citizens to represent them in the government by making laws.

The colony was created by a group of English Pilgrims looking for religious freedom in the New World. Originally they received a charter from the King of England to create a colony just north of Jamestown. They set out on a ship called the Mayflower. However, they failed to reach their destination and landed instead in Massachusetts. Since they were no longer under the charter of the King they decided that they were going to create their own laws that everyone agreed to follow. This document was called the Mayflower Compact and laid the foundation for self-government in America.
