  3. Why is sorting and classifying important? Sorting and classifying are very important life skills. Sorting is a basic thinking skill that helps people organize and understand their surroundings. In order to sort and classify a group of objects, one must recognize a common attribute. An attribute is a particular property which a group of objects have in common. For example, a student might sort and classify a group of buttons by the color, the size, or the shape of the buttons.

The attribute they have in common is that they are all ODD numbers and cannot be divided by 2 equally. In group 2, I put #2, 4, 6, 8. The attribute they have in common is that they are all EVEN numbers andcan be divided by 2 equally.

  7. Is there more than one way to correctly sort and classify these objects into the two groups? YES! But always DEFEND YOUR THINKING!

  8. A A C C B B E E D D F F Group 1 Group 2 MODEL - EXAMPLE #2 In group 1, I put shapes A, B, & F. The attribute they have in common is they all have equilateral sides (same length sides). In group 2, I put shapes C, D, & E. The attribute they have in common is they do not have equilateral sides (only two sides are equal to each other)

  9. Is there more than one way to correctly sort and classify these objects into the two groups? YES! But always DEFEND YOUR THINKING!

  10. Group 1 Group 2 MODEL - EXAMPLE #3 F E A C B D In group 1, I put A and D. The attribute they have in common is they are both pennies, worth $0.01 each and made of copper. In group 2, I put B, C, E and F. The attribute they have in common is they are NOT pennies, each worth more than $0.01 and all made of silver.

In group 2, I put shapes A, C, F and G. The attribute they have in common is that NONE have right angles (90 degrees)
