ARK Chamberlain Academy • Joseph Chamberlain (1836-1914) was a self-made businessman, who made his career in Birmingham, as a manufacturer of screws and then as a radical Liberal Mayor of the city, MP and campaigner for educational reform. • His contribution, as a young Liberal activist to campaigns for universal education led him to his election to the council. In 1867 he helped found the Birmingham Education League which highlighted that almost 50% of children- mostly in urban areas- did not attend school. Chamberlain backed the campaign for free, secular, compulsory education, saying that 'it is as much the duty of the State to see that the children are educated as to see that they are fed.'

ARK James Watt Academy • James Watt (1736 –1819) was a Scottish inventor and mechanical engineer whose improvements to the Newcomen steam engine were fundamental to the changes brought by the Industrial Revolution in both the UK and the world. • James Watt’s image now appears on the back of the new £50 note. James Watt appears on the note alongside his long-time collaborator Matthew Boulton; this is the first banknote designed with a dual portrait on it. James Watt lived and is buried in Handsworth, Birmingham.

  6. Academy Name? ARK Lunar Academy • In the late 18th century, a small group of intellectual thinkers met and established the Lunar Society in Birmingham. The members of this group launched the Industrial Revolution, discovered oxygen, harnessed the power of steam and pioneered the theory of evolution; the quartet of Matthew Boulton, James Watt, Joseph Priestly and Erasmus Darwin. The potter Josiah Wedgwood, another member, summed up the ethos of this group when he said that they were ‘living in an age of miracles in which anything could be achieved’.

  7. Academy Name? ARK Two Manors Academy • This name relates to the former manors of Kings Norton and Northfield and Weoley. These manors formed part of the King's Norton and Northfield Urban District, a local government administrative district from 1898 until 1911. Much of its area was afterwards absorbed into the neighbouring Borough of Birmingham, under the Greater Birmingham Scheme.

Thomas Hall Ark Academy • Thomas Hall (1610-1665) educated at Kings School Worcester, Bailol College Oxford but later transferred to the then newly founded Pembroke College where he graduated B A in 1629. Later he became a grammar school master at Kings Norton and a curate in this parish. His book 'The Font Guarded' was the first book to be published in Birmingham. He was a lover of books and learning, he founded a library in Kings Norton and transferred all his books to it for public use. During the civil war he was imprisoned 5 times, and his property was many times plundered. Under The Act of Uniformity (1662) he was ejected from his position in the church and suffered great poverty. He died on April 13th 1665 and was buried at Kings Norton Churchyard.
