About Franciscan University • Faithfully Catholic and purposefully seeking to operate from the Heart of the Church • Comprehensive; Associates, Bachelors, and Masters liberal arts University located in Steubenville • At about 2400 students and 40+ programs • Has a structure with a strong VPAA and Rotating Chairs / Graduate Directors who teach and research • Recap of recent history as in our paper

  4. Purpose • Faculty evaluation at Franciscan University attempts to foster: • Faculty collaboration as communities (programs, departments) with “practices” • Documentation of evidence of distinction • Self-reflection and self-direction in articulating personal and communal plans for growth

  5. Areas Measured for Faculty Performance at Franciscan • Teaching • Scholarship • Internal Service • External Service • All Areas are examined with quantitative and qualitative methods which are “triangulated”

The Faculty Appraisal Packet • The FUS Faculty Appraisal Packet has the following: • A cover letter that tells the faculty the purpose of the Faculty Appraisal at Franciscan University • A quantitative checklist of work load indicators • A list of faculty generated “products” and authentic evidences (sample graded work, class observations) • A four section narrative on contributions and goals. • A summary signature page for the faculty and chair

Authentic Assessment of Faculty • SoTL projects are contracted with the CTLL (Center for Teaching and Learning) • Research for university operations Faculty can ‘own’ the results for scholarship / evidence • Narrative Faculty / Chair • Faculty are encouraged to offer the kinds of complex ‘products’ needed to demonstrate, to make the case for, distinction • VPAA must approve verification method

Conclusions • The Faculty Appraisal Process at Franciscan University of Steubenville seeks to give formative and summative feedback to the teacher • It features both qualitative and quantitative measures • It features feedback on each individual faculty member from many perspectives to inform VPAA decision • It is flexible and adaptable to changes overtime to support the university mission and vision

Conclusions • Faculty Appraisal at FUS can result in specified goals and plans • These are captured in annual appraisal and Department Reports These can be funded in the given year through budget allocation of special project fund • They may be documented over time in career flight plans of individual faculty or in long range academics division planning • Others, captured in long range plans, are argued for to be moved to the University Wide level or pursued in the future, as means allow
