  2. I. First English Colony • Jamestown was the 1st permanent English colony in the New World in 1604. • Many years of starvation and death until the cultivation of tobacco. • London Company created the headright system. • Anyone who paid for passage to New World received land.

  3. I. First English Colony • The headright system created: • Large tobacco plantations. • More indentured servants & then African slaves. • The London Company created the House of Burgesses in 1619 so settlers could help govern the colony.

  4. I. First English Colony • House of Burgesses was not completely democratic. • It followed the English traditions since the Magna Carta. • Jamestown grew into the colony of Virginia. • Jamestown also established a pattern for other southern colonies.

  5. II. New England colonies • These colonies were Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, & Rhode Island. • They were started to have religious freedom. • Puritans, known as the Pilgrims, landed at Plymouth in 1620.

  6. II. New England colonies • Pilgrims signed the Mayflower Compact. • A document that stated that the people can form the government. • They struggled just like Jamestown. • Received help from natives, like Jamestown, and learned to grow corn.

  7. II. New England colonies • By the 1630s, more Puritans moved to Massachusetts Bay Colony. • They had invested in their own joint stock company & brought their charter. • Started democratic government with town meetings & general assembly. • All male church members could vote.

  8. II. New England colonies • They started schools so kids could learn to read the Bible. • They established religious conformity. • Dissenters (those who disagreed with the Church) were exiled and started other colonies.

  9. II. New England colonies • Puritans tended to have large families so the population grew quickly. • They all had the same religion.

Middle Colonies • A very diverse group of Europeans lived in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, & Maryland. • Dutch settlers in New York • Swedish settlers in Delaware • English Quaker settlers in Pennsylvania • Quakers were a religious group that promoted religious tolerance & good relations with natives.

  11. III. Middle Colonies • King Charles II gave William Penn land to repay a debt. • This gave him rights of a proprietor and he could name the governor. • Pennsylvania also had a representative assembly. • It was founded to make money & used its harbors and fertile land.

  12. IV. Carolina • Carolina was founded as a proprietary colony. • Charles II granted land to 8 Lords Proprietors. • The Proprietors wanted to make money by charging settlers a quitrent on the land. • They hired John Locke to write the Fundamental Constitutions of Carolina.

  13. IV. Carolina • Proprietors used the headright system to encourage immigration. • This led to huge plantations that grew cash crops. • 1st English settlers came from British colony of Barbados. • Brought slaves and slave system with them. • Slavery made plantation owners super wealthy.

  14. IV. Carolina • Others moved to Carolina from: • France • Switzerland • Germany • Scotland • Ireland • Huguenots(French Protestants) • Jews

  15. IV. Carolina • People moved here for: • Fertile land. • Mild climate. • Many waterways. • Proprietors governed by using: • Governor. • Grand Council.
