  6. Hard Times • Most settlers in the first 2 waves died • Leadership uses harsh control to save colony • Relations with Indians alternate between shaky peace and violence

  7. Brown Gold • Tobacco trade saves American colonies • John Rolfe • Indentured servants – contracted worker for a limited time in return for food, shelter and travel expenses • Headright System – 50 acres if you come to Virginia!

  8. House of Burgesses • Jamestown Government • 1st popularly elected legislature in New World • White male landowners could vote for House members • Governor could veto House legislation

Virginia Times Activity • In groups of 2 or 3, make a newspaper front page covering a major event in Jamestown history. • The settlers clash with Native Americans/becoming a royal colony (pg. 46-47) • Hostilities develop (pg. 47) • Bacon’s Rebellion (pg. 47-48) • Front page requirements • Who, what, when, where, why? • Newspaper title (with date) and Headline • One color picture • One mock interview • 2 to 3 paragraphs (at least 10 sentences)
