  1. DON’T MAKE ME THINK 5 Guiding Principles Steve Krug

  2. #1 – Don’t make me think! • A website layout should be as self-evident as possible. Ease of use is crucial. • Make links and panels as obvious as they can be. Be direct and to the point. Clickable links should be very clearly clickable. • Streamline searches. Remove unnecessary things such as keyword distinctions.

  3. #2 - How we really use the Web • Web Pages aren’t read, there scanned. Words that catch the users eye will end up being the ones read. • Users Satisfice. This means the first reasonable option will be chosen, not the optimal choice. Once a link is found resembling what was being searched, chances are it will be clicked. • People muddle through things. This means things are used without having any idea how they work.

  4. #3 – Billboard Design 101 • Create a clear visual Hierarchy. Make the most important things the most prominent. Put things logically related visually close. Nest things inside of each other to show what’s part of what • Use Conventions to make web pages familiar and easy to use. • Divide the web page up into clearly defined areas. Each section should have a clear theme (i.e. products area, contact us, etc.) • Make it obvious what is clickable. • Keep noise down to a dull roar. Avoid having a excessively busy page with to many effects. At the same time don’t have a bunch of small visual noise.

  5. #4 – Animal, vegetable, or mineral? • Keep choices on the web as simple as possible • Mindless choices are advantageous to avoid having the user question or think hard about the options

  6. #5 – Omit needles words • Keep words on a web page to a minimum. The rule here is take all words on a page and then cut them in half. If your feeling aggressive cut them in half once more. • This will reduce page noise, make content more useful and prominent, and shortens the page allowing more to be seen on the screen before scrolling. • Things such as introductory text or instructions should be cut out.
