In the face of challenges, charter schools must seize the moment by implementing strategic planning that encompasses critical resources: time, people, and dollars. Develop a detailed strategic plan aligned with a purposeful calendar, ensuring that every day has a defined goal. Engage students, volunteers, community partners, and future board members while continuously marketing and communicating your mission. Financial planning is essential; ensure fundraising efforts are robust and adhere to regulations. Integrity is paramount—commit to your vision and create a sustainable future for your school.

The Time is Now Critical Resources: Time, People and Dollars
Time • Develop a strategic plan • Ready to Open Checklist • Align the plan with a strategic calendar • Including board meetings (purposeful) • Every day has a purpose • Set long and short time goals
People • Market and Communicate (NON-STOP) • Define who you are. Do not allow outside parties to do so. • You need: • Students • Volunteers • Community Partners • Future board members • Visit other high performing charter schools! • Luck is when preparation meets opportunity!
Money • Remember – school will be funded at the beginning of 2014 Fiscal Year (July 2014) • Must have Certificate of Occupancy of Educational Purposes on file at OCS. • Fundraise • Every dollar shall have a name • Long-Term financial planning • Avoid the overwhelming lease/loan just to open the school). • Facility contingency plans (i.e. Invest Collegiate) • Over 95% of closed NC Charter schools is the result of poorly managed finances
Do Not Forget About • Adhere to bylaws and adopted policies • Open Meeting Laws • Must be adhered to after final approval • If you do not have a policy – DO NOT make one up! • Your application IS the implementation plan • Non-Negotiables: Integrity towards your program
Defined • “Living with integrity means: Not settling for less than what you know you deserve in your relationships. Asking for what you want and need from others. Speaking your truth, even though it might create conflict or tension. Behaving in ways that are in harmony with your personal values. Making choices based on what you believe, and not what others believe.” ― Barbara De Angelis
