This overview explores the transformation of Earth's atmosphere from its primordial state, rich in ammonia, carbon dioxide, methane, and water vapor, to its current composition dominated by nitrogen, oxygen, and argon. It details the crucial role of blue-green algae in developing oxygen through photosynthesis and the subsequent formation of the ozone layer, which shielded the planet from harmful UV radiation. Additionally, it highlights the alarming increase in carbon dioxide due to industrial activities and discusses its impact on global warming and climate change.
E N D
The Atmosphere before life • Very different from our current atmosphere. • Consisted mainly of: • Ammonia (NH3) • Carbon Dioxide(CO2) • Methane(CH4) • Water Vapour(H2O)
NO OXYGEN!?!? • U.V. radiation from the sun caused CHEMICAL REACTIONS that lead to LIFE • ~1 Billion years later BLUE-GREEN ALGAE (BGA) began to form.
Photosynthesis The Blue Green Algae converted CO2 and water in the atmosphere to glucose and oxygen. CO2 + H2O-> O2 + Glucose Result: Decreased CO2 Increased O2
As the amount of O2 increased. OZONE (O3) formed. • The ozone layer began to form and was able to FILTER OUT U.V. RADIATION. • Allowed for more complex life
So What is in the Atmosphere Now? ppm=parts per million
Nitrogen, Oxygen, and Argon make up approximately: • 99.964% of the atmosphere today.
The Increase of Carbon Dioxide • We have seen a giant increase in CO2 since the industrial revolution ~30% • Much of the CO2 emissions are a result of burning FOSSIL FUELS • Human caused global warming is called anthropogenic global warming
What are the Effects? • An overall INCREASE in the world’s TEMPERATURE • Polar ICECAPS are melting • This causes the ocean currents to change
