  2. The Challenge… • … to investigate water use in the local area • identify a water issue to be addressed • design and present a proposal • to reduce consumption of drinking water at school or in the local area.

  3. Banksia Road PS – Class 3C • The issue… wasting water at home! On average, showers take at least 10 minutes. 5% of people surveyed leave the tap on when washing their teeth. 3

  9. Banksia Road PS – Class 4P • The issue… using drinking water for toilet flushing… The K-2 toilet block has 4 toilets in the boys, 7 toilets in the girls, a total of 14 taps and 10 bubblers.

  10. Banksia Road PS – Class 4P The solution … Plans for collecting rainwater Our covered walkways … could not only be used to harvest water but also to transfer water from the COLA to the roof of the toilet block andinto the rainwater tanks. Water would need to be pumped from the tanks into the toilet block for use in the toilet cisterns. This would save hundreds of litres of water each day.

  40. Santa Sabina College The issue…identifying all the areas in the school where water is used… * Only a few toilets had half flush cisterns and some did not work * Inconsistent flow from all taps * Inconsistent time taps stayed on * Bubblers spurted water … We were shocked by our results!

KDC: Purposeful real world learning • Since 2004: over 2,500 students, 80 teachers • Links to the real worlds of science and of technology • Active learning for a purpose • Student-centred – emphasises what kids do, rather than just the knowledge they have to acquire • Connects students to industry practitioners • Demonstrates the role and work of architects in the community.
