  1. Beam Intrumentation in the PS BOOSTER injection region J. Tan On behalf of BE-BI group Follow-up review on PSB 160 MeV H- Injection CERN 20 March 2012

  2. Outline • Dump current monitor • Screens at Stripping foil location • Beam trajectories • Beam Loss Monitors • Summary

  3. Status of DUMP current monitors • From initial specs: 2 independent channels (plates) → Signal H0/H- ~ 1000 → 2 differents electronics? • 1 pair of polarization plate for both channels • ACTION 12 all mechanical aspects prepared by BI will be transmitted to EN/STI for integration with their DUMP (support, insulated spacer dimension, feed through, etc…) → 2012 quarter 2 ? • BI-PM will provide the electronics based on the integrator module under development for PS SEM • → 2012 quarter 3 or 4 • - ACTION 19 : From review follow-up: determining injected beam angle at foil • Request not included in initial specs • Need more details about requirements (resolution, threshold) • Not trivial development: segmented plates?

  4. Stripping foil : Status of BTV • Work on these monitors restarts only after the winter technical stop • The mechanism will be designed around the solution proposed for: • easier maintenance (only 1 movement) • visualisation of the stripping foil from beam side • visualisation of the beam screen from beam side as well • ACTION 14 From April 1st, Axel Ravni (mechanical engineer) joins the ML team and will be in charge of the mechanical design under the supervision of BI colleagues: • Preparation of a ‘model’ (not motorized) to be inserted in the stripping foil prototype → validate space/mechanical obstruction to avoid April/May • Design screen insertion device (electrical rotary movement) May/June/July • Order parts / machining for a prototype August/September/October • Mounting prototype October • Test in stripping foil prototype October/November • → Green light to launch 4 monitors + 1 spare (~ 6 months) • Interlock design to be discussed with TE/ABT (hardware or/and software) • Integration of entire monitor to be done (camera, support, RAD BOX, etc…) when the system will be precisely defined • Electronics/Detector • - use ‘standard’ BTV hardware • - use Vidicon tube based camera

  5. Screen mechanism idea Injected beam Circulating beam • H- beam observed • Image of front of screen and front of foil • Fixed mirror inside the chamber -> single movement (screen) • Tricky design of supports (tilted)

  6. Beam trajectories :Beta function and beta beating • ACTIONS 3+18 • A prototype of the new acquisition system (“a la PS”) will be tested in the PSB in Sept. 2012 • 3 BPMs equipped • Very basic test bench : no FESA class, no GUI, not an operational system for OP !! • LS1 • New Front-end electronics (amplifiers, ADCs..) • Need new cables !! Cabling priority level to be defined for LS1 • After LS1 , IF the cabling campain is completed • Data processing : complete trajectories, orbit • Every ring will get its own acquisition (no multiplexing) 16 dual-plane PUs per ring Total : 64 PUs

  7. BLMs • Loss monitor coverage • Present status : one pair of ACEMs per period • BI agrees to implement : • 32 LHC type BLMs (IC) • 32 BLMsadditional pairs of LICs upstream QDs • But we need new cables !! Cabling priority level to be defined for LS1 • Injection zone • ACTION 20 • BI agrees to implement : • 12 LICs around the BSW magnets • 8 diamond detectors connected to OASIS to perform turn by turn injection loss studies • Interlock design to be discussed with TE/ABT (hardware or/and software) • But we need new cables !! Cabling priority level to be defined for LS 1.5

  8. Summary Actions have been addressed by the Beam Instrumentation Group and are being followed-up Close collaboration with stripping foil and dump specialists Concerns about the feasibility of BLMs and BPMs changes due to cabling priorities in the PSB
